Cake – Opera Singer Lyrics 22 years ago
I dont believe the song is limited only to "Opera Singers". The song, to me, is about any kind of primadonna, like the ones who tend to infest our popular entertainment and sports landscape today. They make remarks about how they are the best, and how they will never be forgotten, but in the end, they are often surpassed and forgotten.

To me, the song is about a political prisoner (and perhaps in a Latin American country, as it is stereotypically Hispanic to have a plastic saint) , an author. He is writing about his experiences, exercising his ability to write and disseminate information despite his incarceration. He is such a talented writer, and he is actually using his ability. Unfortunately, the people who aren't in prison, who perhaps may have even more talent than him, don't use their talent even though they have much more ability and freedom to write! The man on the street might just as well be in the cell, because he refuses to use his intelligence.

Cake – Italian Leather Sofa Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree with HersheyDog. The serrated edge, and the fact that she "doesn't have to use force" leads me to believe that her manipulation is so good that she no longer has to try at it. Perhaps she uses her body to manipulate her man? Anyways, I think the island imagery denotes the inaccessibility of the man she is with. Perhaps he has done very wrong things in his life, perhaps he is a not a "good man", but she cannot know because she is unable to communicate with him. Her superficial nature, though, allows her to disregard this. She's got her friends, so who cares if he's a "good man"?
