| Motion City Soundtrack – L.G. FUAD Lyrics

Random yet somewhat related thoughts-
Type "lgfuad" as an away message on IM- most of the world will think you just kinda pounded on your keyboard cuz you're pissed or something, but us MCS folk will know what you're saying! We will all nod and smile knowingly- that's what we do.
At first listen I was upset that the brilliant moog riff at the end of this song was one of the few on the album, after they spoiled us with riffs aplenty on 'I Am the Movie". But I've come to not compare the two and realize how perfectly placed that riff is, in context.
Each of the three LGFUAD repetitions in the song have decidedly different tones to them. The first seems like an innocent suggestion, the second is, well, in between, and the final one shows us an irate, fed-up Justin.
I think in addition to emotion, this song is a definite reflection of personality, which is rare. I feel like this album helps me to get to know Justin and the boys a lot better, and not just how he/they feel. |

Possibly Motion City's best. I've seen em twice (can't wait for the third at Warped...) and they closed with this both times. Nothing makes the kids jump like this one. |

This is such bullshit- I had to sit there all that time and pose while I modeled for the artwork across from this song, and I didn't even get a mention in the liner notes! |

| Mae – The Everglow Lyrics

First of all, an amazing album top to bottom- one of my favorites from the first listen.
Call me an overanalytical prick, but I think it's interesting to look at this album from a psychological perspective, specifically using Maslow's hierarchy of needs. It seems like our little protagonist's experiences conform to the hierarchy- he takes care of his more basic needs first and then moves on up. This can be seen through the songs and the illustrations- survival needs, then finding acceptance with himself and others, etc. To me, "the Everglow" is when he reaches that highest point of self-actualization. I like what Light Up Ahead said about self-confidence and pride, but it's more than that. It's reaching that point where perhaps "Heaven makes sense", where you are literally all you can be. The gate imagery in the illustration drives home the heaven concept. I'm not trying to say that the Everglow is heaven on earth, but it's in that direction. |

Glamorous, I'm with you about Michelle's voice, but this song just doesn't do it for me. It's the only song on this amazing CD that I ever feel compelled to skip, just because her voice doesn't sound like it's meant to lead. She's a wonderful complement to Brother John, but I don't think that she should be any more than that.
Oh, and Glamorous, check the time you posted. Andrew McMahon would be proud. |

I wish that everyone on SM could be mature as the Dylan posters. I love the respectful debate and idea sharing- nice work!
As for my two cents, I've read that the Joker's 'wine' and 'earth' that are consumed by the businessmen represent blood and body of Jesus. I'm not sure what Christian perspective Dylan was shooting for here, but in Catholicism, to regard the Eucharist as bread and wine rather than the real presence of Christ isn't right- those who do "don't know any of its worth." |

Easily my favorite Dylan song... if it's not yours, it should be! Not that anybody's gonna read this, but... yeah, it covers the full Dylan spectrum- insightful, political, sometimes nonsensical, completely hysterical. Gotta love the noble-sounding title and the constrasting, irreverent content. I love it! |

| Hidden in Plain View – 20 Below Lyrics

First of all, let me say I love HIPV. They came and played at my school last month, and they closed their set with this song. So they played it, it was awesome, they walked off, and the crowd went nuts and called for one more song. Rob came back out and was like, "Uh guys, don't you know when we close with Twenty Below we're not expecting an encore?" So we kept yelling and they somewhat reluctantly played one more. It was just an awkward ending to an otherwise awesome show. It just kinda left everybody with a bad taste in their mouths. But life goes on, and they still kick ass, so...
Speaking of kicking ass, their opener that night, Arms of Orion, is effing amazing. I find the lead singer to be very Adam Lazzara-esque in his performance, so if TBS fans get a chance to see Arms of Orion, do it! |

| Piebald – Just A Simple Plan Lyrics
|
Am I a sick bastard or...
is the windowsill where you can rest your chin a clever allusion to the guillotine?
is the seat where you can get the perfect rest a clever allusion to the electric chair?
is the song saying stop sleeping so much because there's so much to do BUT if you're gonna keep sleeping you should die and here's a few ways to do so (other than "sleeping yourself to death")?
Yes I know Piebald is super-lighthearted and it would be a stretch, but that's just how I take it. And if you haven't seen them live, you really really should. But don't laugh when Travis, perhaps the skinniest dorkiest (yet coolest) dude in history, busts out the face-melting guitar solos. |

| Finch – Perfection Through Silence Lyrics

A couple things- first of all, does anybody else hear a huge similarity between the intro riff and the intro riff in "Fluxy" by labelmates The Early November?
Second, this song took on a new meaning when I read the book "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok. It's about a kid growing up with a father who is a rabbi, and the father never speaks to his son personally, only about religion. The father's idea is that his son will be perfected through not speaking with his dad- through silence. I'm sure that's not what the song was intended to be about, but then again the prompt asks what does it mean to ME? |

I hate to say it, but since nobody mentioned it yet, the title is clearly a Ja Rule reference... and you're allowed to hate rap and still love the song.
Anyway, awesome song. I was kinda put off by Good Mourning at first- I felt like it only had half the generally depressed pissed-off-ness of the previous stuff. But it's awesome that Dan's a happy camper now and he can still write great songs. |

Can't believe nobody's commented on this sweet band! They're from Chicago and effing rock. If I remember correctly, the singer (Adrian) wrote this song for his current girlfriend when their relationship was just starting, things were just starting to take off but he/they were still really unsure about things.
One way or another, anyone who likes anything from Taking Back Sunday to Rise Against should check out Burning Bright! |

Are you guys serious about thinking that the first stanza is about literally playing with fire and setting fire to bridges? It's clearly figurative "burning bridges." I'm also fairly certain that in "Calm Before the Storm" the sun didn't ACTUALLY burn out... You sell FOB short. It's cool though, props to you for loving this band, can't wait to see them next semester. By the way, does anybody think that it's weird that a band that has nearly a million and a half plays on purevolume has only a handful of comments here? |

| The Unseen – Goodbye America Lyrics

You people make me happy that I'm NOT one of you. Do I agree with all the policies and actions of this country? No I don't. But despite this, I'm not going run around waving middle fingers and cursing America. Punk is about seeing something you don't like and advocating change, not bitching and moaning about it.
As a final thought, every time you run your mouth about not liking your country (I do it too, don't worry), you should THANK the US for granting you the right to do so. Free speech can't be taken for granted, and in general, freedom isn't free. Have some respect. |

History lesson pertinent to the song- Holy Roman refers to the HOLY Roman Empire, not the regular old Roman Empire. The HRE was more Germanic, Charlemagne was the emperor at one point, ring a bell yet? The empire was attacked from the outside and fell apart, but had a stronghold in... some town, I don't remember which, but I guess that's the "leg to stand." What would the US's current leg to stand be? |

| Rx Bandits – Overcome (The Recapitulation) Lyrics

About this song's Manifest Destiny line: Manifest Destiny was a concept used to describe the US's imperialistic ventures into the west in the 1800's. According to MD, the US was meant to reign 'from sea to shining sea'- in order to bring to fruition (aka manifest) the preordained mission (destiny) of ruling the continent, they had to kill Native Americans and supress people and all that other good stuff. Back to the song, I think they're saying that current US foreign policy is reverting back to MD-era reasoning. He says that MD the first time around was a mistake, and that we'll make the same mistake in Iraq and elsewhere if we don't wake up.

| Thursday – A Hole In The World Lyrics
|
|
I absolutely love the Punk Goes Acoustic version (even though the title of the record is a terrible misnomer- there are only a handful of punk bands on it), but I think the intention of the lyrics gets skewed in that version. This song definitely features a lot of existentialist influence, which is probably the darkest philosophy (or lack of philosophy, as those people would say) in the world. In general, Thursday makes you think of "dark"- if you don't believe that, just listen to the spoken break in "Paris in Flames". But the breakdown in the acoustic version is anything but dark. It sounds uplifting, triumphant. And I could be wrong, but it sounds like "There is a..." becomes "There is love..." A hole in the world that could be filled with love? Hardly existential. Please, before you dismiss the "...is love..." theory, listen closely to the acoustic song and let's hear what you think. |

| Dashboard Confessional – Remember to Breathe Lyrics

The first time I heard this song, it was my absolute least favorite Dashboard song. I started to think that maybe the DC-naysayers were right, that Chris is a whiny little bitch ("So sneakers or flip flops? I'm starting to panic"- Gimme a break...) and that I'm wasting my time listening to him yap. It wasn't until I heard the MTV Unplugged version that I started to give this song a chance, and I'm glad I did. I realized that every guy on the planet feels exactly what he's talking about- being unsure, nervous, being at the girl's mercy- and that these things are so HUMAN to feel. And that's the reason that DC isn't going away any time soon. Chris doesn't write about girls or relationships, he writes about the human condition and how his experience fits into it. EVERYONE can relate and make it their own.
On a different note, has anybody heard this song live recently? I was just at the Pittsburgh show, and they busted out a sweet add-on section to the end. Chris sang four bars of Brand New's "I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light", four bars of Further Seems Forever's "The Moon is Down", and then something along the lines of "So she said listen up, Chris/ I can't get laid in this town without these pointy fucking shoes/ My legs are black and blue/ And so are you, and so are you." It was powerful- a definite 'wow' moment. |

Sure there was a teacher named Mulligan, but I think we're still missing the point. The name "Mulligan" is significant to the story. A mulligan in golf (or Snood) is when you had a bad shot and you get to do it over. Mr. Mulligan here took a bunch of twists and turns in his life, but got a bunch of second chances, or mulligans, along the way. Anybody follow me here? |
