| Joni Mitchell – Cactus Tree Lyrics

I think this song is about being so in love but also not being able to compromise oneself in the name of this love. Joni states, "And she's so busy being free" to note that she is too involved in her own life and is unsure of how to open up completely. Her love for him is seen as restrictive and a barrier to her own mind and freedom. I think that the key point that Joni makes in this song is that love involves the freeing of self with another person and being able to feel freedom while still attached to another. Love should not be a barrier. She is unable to feel the depth of this love as her heart is dull and hollow like a cactus tree. She is putting up yet another barrier by feeling this love for him when really she needs to learn how to be free with another person. This is the truest of love as well as freedom - it is the undoing of one another that reaches the deepest emotions and states of being: love and freedom and how to reconcile the two seeming extremes. |

I think that the woman that she meets could actually be anybody. It's the recognition of her love for him and how she longs to become drunk off it once more. Because the woman reminds her of him, she reaches a deeper realization of her incessantly growing love for this man. She sees him in everything she does and everyone person she meets. |

i agree that this song offers so many explanations and understandings as well but personally I see it in the drug abuse aspect. but that is probably just how it relates to my life because ive seen people with drug addictions. music/poetry is relative. |

I think this song is definitely about drug addiction - in particular coke. I see the other eating disorder reference; however, there are many more prominent references to drugs. For example, "the mask i polish in the evening by the morning looks like shit" - putting on a facade, losing one's inhibitions under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
This line - "the love i sell you in the evening by the morning won't exist" - I believe is a reference to selling drugs...the love is drugs or alcohol, that will all be consumed by morning.
"you're looking skinny like a model with youe eyes all painted black
keep going to the bathroom always say you'll be right back
well it takes one to know one kid i think you've got it bad"
- cocaine addiction makes you thinner usually...eyes become blackaround the lids and underneath. like her, he also has a bad addiction.
"the reasons all have run away but the feeling never did" - losing one's mind in consumption of alcohol or drugs...the only feeling is the completely lackthereof.
but the best line(s) of the entire song: "and if you promise to stay conscious i will try and do the same
yeah we might die from medication but we sure killed all the pain
but what was normal in the evening by the morning seems insane"
an amazing song nonetheless. conor really opens up in this song it feels...i think a lot of people can and will be able to relate to this song because of its underlying elements. |

Going to California...I think its all about their love for the state. People have a tendency to idealize California, and it shows further throughout this song. Whatever the real interpretation, beautifully played song. |

First song I ever heard by Joni. And its breathtaking each time I listen to it. The emotion in this song runs so deep. The use of the river as a metaphor for escapism is amazing and shows pure talent in the lyrics. |

This song is underrated. Everything about this song has such deep meaning and is so true. The lyrics can speak to anyone in some form. Johnny Rzeznik has a wonderful way of communicating through his music.
I agree with chino on this. Young people grow up too fast - they become adults before they are ready, never living their life as a child to the fullest extent. This song kind of represents a need for childhood ambition and dreams, slow down and look at life and live it before the moment passes you by: "And even though the moment passed me by I still can't turn away
I saw the dreams you never thought you'd lose tossed along the way ."
The orphan could be used as a metaphor representing society that grew up too fast. That never really got a chance to know who they were and where they came from. Makes you think. |
