The Mountain Goats – Philippians 3:20-21 Lyrics 15 years ago
Also DFW went through courses of electro-shock as a last-ditch effort in the year before his death.

Just read an interview with Darnielle where he confirmed this song is a reaction to David Foster Wallace's suicide. In Infinite Jest, Wallace compared a depressed person committing suicide to a person jumping out the window of a burning building, so maybe that's the source of the smoke alarms line.

Tom Waits – Hoist That Rag Lyrics 19 years ago
"If the packed theater houses of the Bowery (whose audiences would yell 'H'ist dat rag!' when the curtain failed to rise promptly at the scheduled time)..." Borges, "The Disinterested Killer Bill Harrigan." That's the only other place I've seen the term hoist that rag, but I guess flags and sails make sense too. The story is about Billy the Kid, who is born in New York when the street gangs were everywhere, and he learns how to kill without caring. He moves west and starts shooting people. Kind of works with that, I guess, except the shore bit.

P.O.D. – Abortion Is Murder Lyrics 21 years ago
Maybe I would grant some semblance of intelligence to the musicians if the only lyrical creativity beyond rhyming 'do' and 'you' was this:
Intro yeah, it's the P.O.D. right here
Coming straight from S.D. C - A
619's in effect y'know what I'm sayin'
Givin' you that hardcore sound yeah
Comin' up from the ground boy
That's where it all started y'know what I'm sayin'
Yeah, this is hardcore, you know why it's so hardcore
'Cuz it's bult on the rock - what rock you ask
The rock of Jesus Christ, yeah that's right
Givin' you the truth 'cuz the truth hurts y'kow
But that's how we layin' it down
We ain't got nothin' to hide
And we're breakin' it down like that y'know what I'm sayin'

Whatever, I'm totally for killing in all forms, so if abortion can be murder, I'm down.

Elliott Smith – Baby Britain Lyrics 21 years ago
So this guy and this british girl are in a bar together getting blasted. I mean, these two are getting tanked out of their minds. To the point where this girl, she's yelling "London Bridge is Falling Down" at the top of their lungs. Keep breaking bottles, leaving them half-empty, just drowning in the stuff. Oceans of booze. And this jukebox keeps blaring in the background.

Thrice – Under A Killing Moon Lyrics 22 years ago
It was the Red Scare, I think. Anyway, it wasn't a movie, it was a play called The Crucible by Arthur Miller, and it's fantastic. Anyway, yeah, maybe it's based on that, proabbly.

Thrice – All That's Left Lyrics 22 years ago
Taking the song a verse at a time could provide any mulititude of possible interpretations. And even with Dustin occasionally posting on this site I think he appreciates the thousands of interpretations of his words and wouldn't do a thing to express what he actually intended with the lyrics. Also, I understand that everything you post is simply how you feel, so I'm not going to lambaste any of what you said (also, I think it's well thought out and something I can appreciate amongst the litany of "oh Thrice roxxx!!!" posts). I try to take Thrice songs as I do because I really wish a band this talented weren't so easily strayed by religion, which in my humble opinion is pure fallacy. Especially notions of thaumaturgy (sorry I just learned that word and I like it). Back to the matter at hand, I believe that everything one does that they consider morally wrong and against what they themselves believe does tarnish them in some way, and one's shadow never looks the same after a period of self-degradation. And yes that could be interpreted as sin. However, looking at the rest of the song I still collapse on the notion that maybe there's a chrisis of faith taking place, especially the lines "In summers past... but the answers never came." However I can pick up the notion that he's not talking about himself but rather narrating an event in which someone fell from grace. And the last line leaves me bitter if the whole song is taken at narration because it mentions that without christ one is dead, and even teh notion of forgiveness and savior may be beyond reach. But I would think that the fall from grace would be a result of asking questions of a source one had appreciated their whole life but never really interrogated. Upon the staggering notice that answers can't be found, the protagonist turns from God, and feels betrayed ("call it treason"). So I guess your idea of a return to a life of sin is more or less the same way I perceive it. Wow. You can judge how big a loser one is by the length of their post.

Thrice – All That's Left Lyrics 22 years ago
I always thought it was "meaning in these lies." And as far as see you in the shallows, all his friends are dead in the water from their leap of faith (to stretch the language a little). Also the cliff has been well worn by ignorance, therefore those who have leapt before him have been wrong. I agree with you on In Years to Come, I always thought that was about sacrificing for God and feeling his love, and "it's a different kind of love" drags it away from a loving relationship (presumably with his wife, he's married.) Anyway, it just seemed to me that lyrics from Identity Chrisis were much more pious, and even had allusions to God with terms like Adonai (Ultra Blue) and His Grace (Torch to End All Torches) whereas on the Illusion of Safety he was much more subtle. In any case, I'm just curious what you thought of THIS song, as far as meaning dnask8.

I always presumed some sort of loss of religion in "we implore empty skies." It's a confusing song, but it's amazing.

Thrice – To Awake and Avenge the Dead Lyrics 22 years ago
Song was written before 9/11. Anyway, the Christ idea applies to a lot of Thrice songs, I guess, but this one would be weird just because of the news and 500 channel lines wasting space. And christianity tried to amalgamate itself with Aristotle's teachings.

It seems to me that if you take each thrice album in view of christian faith, that identity chrisis professes a strong belief (ultra blue), illusion of safety confesses an inner conflict with christian faith and it's hypocrisy (betrayal is a symptom) and now this song seems to display a complete loss of faith and the discovery of an absence of devine presence. The fact that god is thanked profusely on their first two albums for giving them the unique chance to express themselves speaks to the notion that they do in fact write songs, occasionally, about god and christianity. Or maybe I'm an idiot.
