I really think this song is about the bombing of Dresden (fyi the premise for Slaughterhouse Five). During WWII the German city of Dresden, a city with no military targets, was completely destroyed by the allies with thousands of phosphorus bombs (red balloons). Hence why it was German. |

Just an interesting fact - the name was taken from a subway stop in Rome. Vitorrio Emanuel was the first leader of a united Italy in the late 1800's. |

Maybe this is so obvious that no one mentioned it, but to me this song is really about how when you're in highschool everyone wants to map out your life FOR you so you all have the same exact goals and ambitions. Then you look back and realize that maybe you should've taken your own steps (hence the "seems foolish now"). I think maybe the "we've been had" part comes from the fact that looking back, it seems as though you were so easily programmed to become what society wanted you to be. |
