malachite has a point on the innocence thing, however i just feel this song is about beauty in life and moving to the future without caring how its going to happen. a road trip is just symbolic of that tossing care to the wind, like the kerouac book, you really are just excited about what's going to happen. and what you are going to see. especially the line, so much has come before those battles lost and won
that just puts all the troubles behind and you road trip into the sun. awesome, awesome imagery. |

this song just feels like los angeles to me. I think its just about the things anthony loves about his sprawling, overindulgent highly visual los angeles culture. However, he makes a bunch of artistic references to himself (a song about what true men don't do (kill coyotes)/ the world of the wild coyote) and also to miles davis (kind of blue) and i think the specials (do the dog with isabella) though that last may just be coincidence. He's just showing that he appreciates art in all its forms. |

still my favourite tune on the latest record. anthony said in an interview with Rolling Stone for Californication that by now, probably every one of his genes was encoded with drug addiction. he's afraid that if he ever has children they'll lead the life he did (don't want to take it up with little joe/ do it like my daddy did). he's spurred to these thougts by revisiting his past and seeing how low he went (all the devils plead) and doesn't want to give it away (so to speak) to his kids. Also, he relives the temptaion even though its so low and base to him (can i... step into a modern scene/ on the day my best friend died i could not get my copper clean) sorry i went so long. |

i remember when this cd came out and everybody had heard "scar tissue" on the radio a bunch of times, the assholes in high school would buy the album and talk about how much this song sucks, apparently because its not a sex rap. I think it flows beautifully, especially in the context of the album, and the lyrics are truly poetic. it sounds like the teenage pregnancy thing to me. and if it helps anyone, "lune" means moon. |

everyone should check out that book all quiet on the western front, it raises excellent questions about war in general, especially the questions of what war means to those who wage it as opposed to those who fight it. but never mind, polak is right, this song is i think more about materialism than war.
the story of a woman on the morning of a war
is just perspective for the materialistic phase; when your sons and husbands go off to war, material things suddenly become much less important. i would imagine, anyway. |

funk is indeed colour blind. and i agree that this song is definitely about race. Anthony's funky-ass crime was "against a state of mind" i.e. that funk is black music. I say that's crap. I never thought about the words to this song, but it is one of the funkiest damn chili peppers songs out there. Its a shame that most people i know these days don't even know about blood sugar sex magic, let alone classic gems like the uplift mofo. o well. |
