I do not view these lyrics as a ‘jab at religion’ as many have speculated- but rather a defense of them. Many lyrics throughout my Jim James fandom have led me to believe that he believes in God. I think here, he is trying to say that not all religious types, and maybe more specifically Christians, are like the kind you see in the news. You could argue he’s talking about Americans (it’s very possible), but I think he is more specifically talking about Christians (and including himself with the we/ us) when he says: “Truly, truly we have become Hated and feared For something we don’t want Listen, listen! Most of us Believe that this is wrong.” “Truly, truly” is a phrase Jesus used often in the Bible- that and the song title lead me to believe that James has a personal connection to Christianity. His appeal that ‘religion should appeal to the hearts of the young’ is most certainly not a ‘stab’ at religion. I believe this song to be an earnest call for change from the perspective of a frustrated Christian who sees many mistakes being made within Christianity and other religions. |

| I love this song. I think it's the song of two kids trying to make a living while having a relationship. She's a stripper and he's a somebody. Her Mom was always downplaying her and all her accomplishments | |
