| Sarah Jaffe – Clementine Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| It could also be a reference to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. | |
| Mirah – Cold Cold Water Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| this song completely describes how i feel right now; my boyfriend wants an open relationship, and i'm trying to be cool about it but it's killing me... | |
| Laura Veirs – Magnetized Lyrics | 19 years ago |

it's "brackish bright water," not "blackish" the third line refers to coal, i believe. |

"purse of a different kind, along with the people inside" refers to money: the people are the presidents on the bills. |

| Nine Inch Nails – March of the Pigs Lyrics | 19 years ago |

am i the only one who sees a sexual connotation to "take the skin and peel it back/ and doesn't it make you feel better?" especially because the next line continues "shove it up inside/surprise!" i'm not denying that this is just a phallic metaphor for more significant themes like authority, conformity, and domination, i just found it strange that noone noticed the foreskin thing. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Little Fury Bugs Lyrics | 19 years ago |

yeah, dude. sorry that the file you downloaded was incorrectly titled "furry" but it is fury. and i agree with borrowedtune; in fact, i just hopped on here to post about that, but they beat me to the punch. i'm not sure i can suggest a legitimate interpretation of how the older song might be related to the death cab one, because the dinosaur jr. one is pretty ambiguous itself. There's a consistent reference to a "rabbit," which in pop culture could refer to any manner of things, including alice in wonderland and the john updike novel. the closest thing i can come up with is this. the lyrics above describe a discontent with the "scene," the way that people people pretend to be your friend and then stab you in the back and everyone is so goddamn fake. and there's a line in "little fury things" that goes: "Then I read, about all those who believe all of your lies" that seems to have SOME connection. not sure about the "bugs." maybe a comment on how the human race is like insects in so many ways? a giant ant colony? or maybe it's the way that bugs bite you without you seeing them and the itch stays with you. i'm not sure. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Tiny Vessels Lyrics | 19 years ago |

i'm female and yet i can relate to the singer's position in this song, concerning both girls and boys i have been in the past. i don't think it's just about what guys do to girls...i really hate the culture of female victimization that gives rise to such ideas. what is vital about this song is that he doesn't start off thinking hey i'm going to use this girl. it's simply the realization, once the physical aspect has started, that this girl isn't very special, that he just doesn't feel anything. sometimes you just don't feel anything, you know? even when maybe you should. this song is such a nice example of brutal honesty that you don't see much in music...everything is so much about idealistic love or the pain of unrequition etc.... this shows another side: what happens when you realize that we're all just in love with the idea of love and that most casual sexual encounters are brutally selfish and empty... |

| The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics | 19 years ago |

i would also like to offer the following thought: when he's staring at the asphalt wondering, does that have to have some kind of "symbolic" resonance echoing some kind of buried thoughts or emotions? i thought of it this way: when you're feeling that state of really just...not feeling, just feeling numb and callous at a time when you know you should be feeling something and you aren't...there's a real tendency, at times like that, to shift one's attention to the physical objects in your proximity, concentrate on them in a way you wouldn't normally, ask questions about them. that's what happens to me, at least, when i'm in an intense emotional situation and i can't really handle that the other person is there, existing at me, and just feeling completely overwhelmed by it all... |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Dream Scream (Daniel Johnston cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
this is such a beautifully polished adaptation of the daniel johnston song... i mean, part of what makes the original endearing IS its awkwardness, but on the other hand, death cab is just sooo good. if you really think about the kind of person saying what this song is saying... i bet you'd be a jerk to him too. i bet he's that pathetic guy that no one really likes. and that kind of pain is so much more real... you know what i mean? "i took it wrong, you liked my song...why couldn't i have you?" god... it just breaks your heart. he thought he could win this girl using his music, but just because she likes his music doesn't change the fact that he is unattractive and alone... it's so poignant. poor guy. |

| The Postal Service – Suddenly Everything Has Changed (The Flaming Lips cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"I think this song is about death, just someone who's been going through their life numbed by the death of a loved one and not really paying attention to anything in the real world. Then suddenly they 'wake up' and reaslise how things have changed, they notice the patterns in the clouds, the shirts bring back memories" i partially agree. but i don't think you have to have experienced a traumatic death to feel numb. i think MOST of us go through our lives numb most of the time. and it's those tiny moments of beauty and realization that serve as such a stark constrast to that numbness. such a beautiful song about epiphany. right along the lines of james joyce or virginia woolf. |

| Dntel – (This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"This song I though was about 2 gays in love" that's a bit narrow to just assume that because of the title i figured "evan and chan" were the psuedonames that ben and tamborello were taking on as they wrote the song. chan marsallis and evan dando both sound like good suggestions for possible "rock star alter egos" to me, thanks to those who suggested that. the fuzziness is conducive to the interpretation of this song being about a dream, but i think that beyond that it's pretty open-ended. i'm inclined to think the heroine might be a reference to some specific rocker girl from 1993 (no one obvious springs to mind), or even a random chick at a bar covering 90s songs, but i might be overreading |

| Tori Amos – The Waitress Lyrics | 22 years ago |
| just complaining about a woman with whom she works who is a total bitch to all the other girls, has a total power trip, but then flirts with all the male customers. tori cant believe how angry this woman is making her for she's normally pretty peaceful... i really love the line "too many stars and not enough sky," not totally sure what it means maybe an allusion to a garish, over-glittery fakeness such as the bitch-waitress and women-like-her tend to have. | |
| Tori Amos – Leather Lyrics | 22 years ago |
| this song is about a woman being used but loving the man so much that she lets it happen...she resigns herself to the fact, and just says, okay, alright, ill do it, just hand me my leather. the nice big fat cigar is an obvious phallic symbol. | |
| Tori Amos – Beauty Queen/Horses Lyrics | 22 years ago |
| i think there is definitely some sexual symbolism here, once again the theme of loss of innocense is explored...like theres this sweet little girl that once loved ponies but is finding a new kind of "pony" to ride now("a sailor? a tailor?..an afro? a pharoah? ...its bill and ben..."), thinking she will find happiness or completeness in sex ("they say that your demons cant go there"); she is seeking true love ("if there is a way to find you i will find you"), but is becoming a whore ("the camera is running, its easy like one two three"). she is trying to stay strong, however, for "threads that are golden dont break easily"...As for the beauty queen part, which i dont think is connected to horses at all, it sounds like she is fascinated with a beautiful girl, cant stop thinking about her...i always thought the last line of that was "but...i like like like, it...", which makes more sense with my interpretation, if its what is written by Novartza then i might be wrong, unless by her "lying" she is alluding to having to lie to everyone about liking a girl. | |
| Tori Amos – Icicle Lyrics | 22 years ago |
| as in Winter, ice and wintry things vs. spring has some reference to the melting of innocence, like winter was inoocense and spring melts the ice of it. isnt "icicle" a very obvious phallic reference? | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Scientist Studies Lyrics | 22 years ago |
| i interpreted the ghosts in the attic part to be an allusion to a soul residing within our heads?? | |
