If birds really don't fly straight then why is the sky open, but most of all why do the birds choose to meander along throughout the air. I think the true meaning of this song is that "greater love has nothing to do with devotion". He is making this concept sound so simple by easing the listener into believing this very simply by starting with an easy notion: birds don't fly straight. Everyone knows that birds do not always fly straight, just look into the sky. He now uses a series of comparisons that make the final thought seem easy. Snow doesn't fall on the ocean. It may fall towards the ocean but as soon as it hits the water it is no longer snow, its turns to water or perhaps even ice. A suicidal man doesn't hesitate. Many people that eventually kill themselves are considered, in the end, suicidal, but many of them hesitate for at least a moment. If someone is truly suicidal than of course they would not hesitate, they do not want to live. Greater love has nothing to do with devotion. Isn't it obvious at this point? I agree and think that he just means that everyone will fall in love with someone someday. It just happens, you cannot devote yourself to the wrong person and force love. I could be wrong about the whole thing though. Maybe its actually about Ice-nine destroying the world. |

I whole-heartedly agree with the fact that it could be about not being able to stop anything from happening in this day and age. I think that it is definitely written in a time when he must have been going from the frustration of knowing this to being at somewhat peace with it. I sometimes feel that things should be done better today, but say to myself that i alone cannot do much. I guess that is just what everyone is saying in the spinning heads. |

| I think this song shows, in a microcosm, the only two ways of living life: by night or by day. Day and night may both just be metaphors for good and bad, social or anti-social, or maybe even lover or hater of the 21st century. I think this song is about The Weakerthans ending up back home for a concert and seeing how much their city has changed. At the beginning it's before the show and the band just looking around their hometown and remembering past memories. At the end i think they start the show and just means a lot to them. This is very straight forward. Its about a friend (a lot of you probably think a girl but all he says is angel and friend) that died and is up in heaven now and though hes lookin for new friends he cant seem to find one that fits this person place because he realizes they were perfect. He feels that the sprit of the friend is still around though because he looks in the sky and can almost see them lookin down on him, and thats why he doesnt feel alone. I'm out, Kal |
