The lyrics pretty much speak for themselves. In the part "Do I have the strength, or do I let go? "
I think he is contemplating either carrying on treading through the supposed waters of worry or caving into death. The fast and furious riffs emphasize the frenetic nature of the song. It was interesting to watch the guys rehearsing on the bonus DVD... Robert Trujillo has definitely added his unique edge to the band. It's good to see the guys gettin back to their faster, harder shit, yet at the same time i hope they don't solely concentrate on it, as i think Metallica are responsible for some of the greatest rock ballads in the history of music, and i'd hate to see that dead and gone...

A very melancholy and touching song. Coming from a traditional Chinese background i can certainly relate, having had a distant mother (and father). There is nothing in the lyrics that has too deep and subtle a meaning, because it conveys all the emotion it needs to. Bitchin riffs also make it a song to remember |

Fuckin hell, I'll be the first to admit that it's an overwhelming source of energy when one is in a rage, as i have been there, but it ain't all fun and games. Why the fuck is it that in damn near every single song in this website some fucker like metallicats has to think that the song deals with drugs - drug addiction. Take a look around people!!! There is only one metallica song I know of that actually deals with drug addiction and that is "Master of Puppets". There may be others, but they're few and far between. For fuck's sake... I'm only angry 'cause i seen this dumb shit posted too many times...
Honestly... it seems like drugs are the only things that some people think about. |

Goddamit!! Never thought i'd see the day when "Tallica would hook up with that wannabe gangstarr Ja fuckin Rule. My god... I love metallica's music with all my heart, but this is one song i will definitely not be bumping. I think we all need to just see that Metallica fucked up on this decision. Everyone makes mistakes, but instead of shunning them, i think we should all ignore this li'l fuckup and move on with Metallica. Ja Rule has got to be the most insecure bitch in the rap industry... 'parently he's scared shitless of that other loser 50 cent over some dumb ole "beef". Christ almighty... rap used to be good in the early to mid 90's... after that, it's just dropped off due to commercialisation. Nowadays any black dude can make it if the execs see that he has money makin potential. Rap shit aside, I'm just about to go off in half an hour to buy the new album. Both songs definitely represent different scenarios and are not exactly the same. Although with careful deliberation I am sure that many connections can be made, Unforgiven II tells me of a story of lost bitter love turned to hate and eventually, death. It contains some elements of repentance and deep contemplation, but hey, that is merely my interpretation. People need to stop criticising each other so fiercely about the meanings. It is so childish! Although there is a basic meaning to this song, it is definite that we did not write this song. Hetfield did, and while we ponder about all the subtle meanings and try to decipher his "code", I think it is important for us all, me included, to just shaddup and enjoy the song. |

It is obvious to see that many people have many different viewpoints, and although there is a basic meaning to the song, it is fitting for each person to take their own interpretation of the song and incorporate it in some way to their own lives. I was in the Triads for the last seven years of my life, and after seeing many brothers fall, and my life crumble before my eyes, this song was the one that inspired me to move on with my life and to exit the fruitless life of the underworld. Nothing else mattered anymore, everything was extranneous save that one faith of mine. I quote: "Couldn't be much more from the heart". This song, unforgiven II, and a couple others, i have requested to be played at my funeral when i am gone. |

Commercialisation is a talented band's best friend and worst enemy at the same time. When i first heard fuel, i thought it was damn hard and raw. Hearing that talentless Avril pop away at it was like listening to fingernails on a blackboard. I am glad that Metallica is getting the recognition it deserves, however, the paradigm is that the ignorant masses kill the original meanings of the songs by completely misinterpreting them. I am unfamiliar to slipknot's music, but all I know is that I really appreciate Metallica's music, and that I used to have the same paranoid fears of that cursed "bedtime prayer". As an insomniac myself, this song gets me pumping every time i hear it. Every one is entitled to their own opinions no matter how fucked up they are. I think some of the people writing here are wrong, but that's my opinion, and they have theirs. LIVE AND LET LIVE! On another note, hate to sound like a jerk, but please people... learn how to spell.
