I don't understand why this song needs to be about John and Michelle or Jesse/Brand New. Yes, lyrically there are some similarities to Soco and other songs, however, this song was, in fact, partially written when John was still in the band and the band was cool with BN. However, it was under the title of "Ellieissohawt" instead of "Slowdance..." (which was also the title of a new song they were working on). I have a live version of it with John clearly singing and most to all of Adam's lyrics are the same or similar. They took out John's lyrics, some of which included a repetition of "Shouldn't you be leaving soon?" around the chorus and "Keep your hands up / And your head down / This is it now / Shut your trap now" towards the end.
Therefore, I doubt the song is about either John, Jesse or Michelle |

I always thought the bullet or the chapstick reference meant that there were two ways he could get hurt, either physically, by a bullet, or emotionally, by the girl moving on to other guys or cheating on him (chapstick). I dunno, that was always my impression of the lyric |

I just read on the Taking Back Sunday message board that this song might be mocking Adam, especially in the part where it goes "This is the way you wish your voice sounds, handsome and smart."
I don't know if I buy that, I doubt it. But then again there is a new feud between Brand New/John Nolan and Taking Back Sunday, so who knows? Apparently Brandnew has been selling hoodies that say "Mics are for singing, not swinging. you know who you are" on the back, obviously refering to Adam. Also, at a recent show I heard Brandnew played "There's No I in Team" and then afterwards Jesse said that nobody besides him or John should ever sing it. |
