Pearl Jam – Do the Evolution Lyrics 22 years ago
my interpretation:

koatis seems to think that evolution has stopped, i.e. "just be happy where we are" - ironically, this is the very attitude that vedder is railing against in this song.

It's about how foolish and arrogant modern man is, thinking we're so advanced, but look at us, we're not - we kill each other, we only care about money and material goods, and what other people think of us (see lyrics) - not very enlightened goals.

If some of us can NOT be greedy, jealous, and war-prone, but rather giving, accepting, and peaceful, then all of us can. But most are too lazy to try. This is what Evolution is supposed to be about - but as the song states, we don't get it - we think we're already evolved.

Pearl Jam – Yellow Ledbetter Lyrics 22 years ago
My interpretation:

Yellow Ledbetter is about the past and the pain of loss. Not about just one scenario involving this.

Pieces of what has been said here fit into this and are thus "correct" - loss of a son at war - loss of an old friend (Tim Ledbetter) - loss of a girlfriend. The unsealed letter and not wanting to open it is about the futile attempt to artificially re-start an old relationship - it's gone and there's nothing you can do, despite wanting to.

Wanting to "leave it again" and "wish it all away" is wanting to forget this person/relationship that now causes this pain of longing.

"Boxer or the bag" means he doesn't know if he was hurt more or if he hurt the other person more who he is thinking about.

"See them on the porch - they don't wave" is you're that close to these people - in your memories, but they don't welcome you back because they are gone - so he doesn't want to stay there living in his memories/past, alone.

"Make me cry" - Mike, help me get this pain out.

What a sad song. PJ's got some sad ones, this might be the saddest. But they express this feeling, which is the healthy way to deal with it.
