Looking through the messages on here, it seems every song ever written by mankind is about drug addiction *roll eyes* Just a hint: This song is a classic folk song. Songwriters weren't real big on writing about drug addiction back in the 1700's, I'm thinkin... |

My interpretation: Loss of a wife/girlfriend/loved one; "A line of cars, all painted black, with flowers and my love, never to come back"... is a funeral procession, carrying the loved one. "Like a newborn baby it happens every day" - just like birth, people die every day. The "as the girls walk by" lines are referring to the hate he feels for himself whenever he sees someone on the street that he finds attractive, and it's not his wife/gf. Not sure about the red door references, though it seems the most well-known symbolism of a red door is that of the Catholic church - possibly signifying this caused him to lose his faith as well. |

| I get this whole song, except for the "arrow and a cross" reference - could somebody explain what the deal is with that? | |

"Climbing the corporate ladder"!?! How in the F could you read this as... Ugh. Anyway, to me this song is so obviously about a failed relationship, and the frustration the guy is going through after the break-up. Almost every time I've gone through a breakup I've wanted to just get in my car and drive... and drive... and try to get my head together. I think this is about the same thing except being on a city streets it's a racer taking out his post-breakup sorrow by hitting the gas on an empty race track. I haven't seen the video - I just know when I picture it in my head I see a guy behind behind the wheel, hands and teeth clenched, holding back tears, while his foot is to the floor. |

Actually at first I didn't realize this was a cover of a folk tune either - I actually ran across it a little later while browsing through folk tunes on mp3.com - and thought "holy crap" to myself hehe. Metallica needs to cover more folk tunes - this one came out awesome :) |

| Kenny Wayne Shepherd – Blue On Black Lyrics | 22 years ago |

The way I interpret this song is that he said or did something to his girl that caused him to lose her, and it was so bad that no matter what he does to get her back, he knows it'll never outweigh what he said or did to lose her in the first place. Things like "blue on black," "cold on ice," whisper on a scream," are things that seem insignificant and even get lost under the force of the other. So whatever he can say now to try to make up for it, is like blue on black - overpowered by the original deed, so it won't bring her back. Or, considering the line "slipped from -your- tongue," this could also mean the other way around - somebody hurt him so badly that no matter what she does - well, you get the picture. It's a bit confusing as this sort of contradicts "doesn't bring you back." |
