Fireworks – Arrows Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. The chorus is so catchy! A great song about growing up and second chances. It has a very early 2000s feel to it. Glad to see songs like this are still being made!

Murder by Death – Spring Break 1899 Lyrics 15 years ago
This has become such a crowd pleaser at MBD shows! Obviously it fits in as a segue into The Devil in Mexico, but it's been introduced by Adam the last two times I saw them as "a song about my piece of shit brother" and a song "about getting really drunk and trying to make things right". Either way it's awesome.

Fantastic song. I love the line "she gave me something cool to drink and that was it for me". I always have to listen to this song a few times in a row because its not long enough.

What do you want as a tattoo? The whole thing, or just "there is no god but God"?

If it's the latter, it's:

لا إله إلاَّ الله

Nneka – Heartbeat Lyrics 16 years ago
God, the hook in this song is so good. This is the best song I've ever heard to come out of Germany. Not surprising it was by a non-German. :(

Honestly, I can't remember all my teenage feelings either. They indeed did seem to see-through to be true. This song is amazing.

Jimmy Eat World – 23 Lyrics 18 years ago
My copy of this album is packed away right now, but whether the actual lyrics are "I won't always live not stopping", or "I won't always live... no, stop it" doesn't matter to me really. I've always heard "no, stop it" and I thought it made Jim sound really vulnerable when he was singing that line. As if he couldn't even finish it, you know? Or maybe he was saying that he won't always live, as if he intended to commit suicide but is saying, "no, stop it" to himself to talk himself out of it. I guess those aren't even the correct lyrics, but that's what it's always meant to me.

I've been listening to this album since it came out when I was 19, and now that I'm turning 23 this year the song is becoming more relevant it seems. As someone else mentioned, when I was 19 I couldn't even imagine being 23 and yet here I am, surprisingly the same and yet so different. It is amazing to me that life can go so fast, but at the same time you experience the same sort of feelings over and over. I could attribute the feelings in these lyrics to a number of girls now, girls that I never would have imagined being with at 19 because the one that I related to this song seemed like the only one that would "have me like you do". But if the last four years have taught me anything, it's that they come and go. I'm sure that even though once again a girl has sent me seeking solace in this song, there'll be another one in the future whom I will probably let "know that part of me".

The first time I heard this song I was instantly reminded of Moneen's "The Song I Never Swore To Sing". At least from about 00:33 on.

The "my heart isn't broken, and I'm not dead" is a reference to the last album, which is pretty cool.

The lyrics of this song arem't really that impressive, but the "how could you?" hook and the guitars and drums accompanying the chorus are awesome.

Taking Back Sunday – MakeDamnSure Lyrics 19 years ago
I really dig the voice in the background that starts at about 2:05. Sounds like she might be saying "please please please" but it get's too distorted after that and I can't make it out. Anyone else notice this?

Thrice – The Beltsville Crucible Lyrics 20 years ago
Well people have said this song is about the recording process of this album, and I agree. First off all it's called "The Beltsville Crucible" which is named after where the album was recorded (Beltsville, MD, not Washington).

Now while the opening lyrics suggest an addiction of some sort, they could also easily relate to Dustin writing the same thing over again without growing. The producer helps him by telling him he needs to write better.

"Shortcuts through graveyards" as people have previously mentioned refers to a route they would commonly take while recording there. "A brand new way to breath" could mean they found a new way to play and express themselves.

"Three thousand miles just to learn" is another obvious reference to recording the album. Thrice is from Southern California, roughly three thousand miles away from where they recorded the album (Beltsville, MD for anyone that wasn't paying attention).

The letting his guard down line I think also refers to giving into the producer a little bit, to write a better record, and in turn the "fire" could be the creativity and ambition and all that involved in writing a record.

And perhaps "you've got to play it again" could mean very literally, you've got to play it over and over until you've got it right.

Now this is a very literal meaning of the song, and it's obvious with lines like "fix/kiss could kill you" Dustin was trying to make it more general so more people could relate to it, since not many people have recorded an album 3000 miles away from home and known what that feels like. So this is what this song means to me, but what it means to you could be anything, and I think Thrice would agree.

Jimmy Eat World – Over Lyrics 20 years ago
"Your attention is attention,
It doesn’t matter if it’s fake or real.
Ill take it if I get it"

That line makes me think that this song is not about a past relationship in the traditional sense. If you've ever had to explain your relationship using a couple sentences instead of saying "My boyfriend/girlfriend" you know what I mean. Perhaps the girl was leading him on, showing him attention, was using him. But he dug her so much that he didn't care. And now without her he just hates life, and hates that he let someone do that to him. My two cents.
