Led Zeppelin – Travelling Riverside Blues Lyrics 22 years ago
This is a fantastic tribute to the great Robert Johnson
(probably one of your most quietly influential blues musicians ever) here are his original lyrics:

If your man get personal, want to have your fun,
If your man get personal, want to have your fun,
Just come on back to Friars Point, mama, barrelhouse all night long.

I got womens in Vicksburg, clean on into Tennesse,
I got womens in Vicksburg, clean on into Tennesse,
But my Friars Point rider, now, hops all over me.

I ain't gonna state no color but her front teeth 's crowned with gold.
Ain't gonna state no color but her front teeth 's crowned with gold.
She got a mortgage on my body 'n' a lien on my soul.

Lord, I'm goin' to Rosedale, gon' take my rider by my side,
Lord, I'm goin' to Rosedale, gon' take my rider by my side,
We can still barrelhouse, baby, 'cause it's on the riverside.

Now, you can squeeze my lemon 'til the juice runs down my,
(spoken: ''Til the juice run down my leg, baby,
you know what I'm talkin' about.')
You can squeeze my lemon 'til the juice run down my leg,
(spoken: 'That's what I'm talkin' 'bout now.')
But I'm goin' back to Friars Point, if I'll be rockin' to my head

Led Zeppelin – When the Levee Breaks Lyrics 22 years ago
Ramthar has made a very pertinent point. Zepplin are masters at reviving very traditional blues songs or inserting snippets of traditional 'blues phrases' into theri tracks. I love listening to blues made up to WWII and am often surprised about the odd lyric cropping up in a Zeppelin track.

Led Zeppelin – Gallows Pole Lyrics 22 years ago
The practice of paying provincial hangmen was very common in England up to the early 18th C. I think that the lyrics have been embellished a little but it's a deliciously dark little number that they have taken right out of medieval history and brought it back to us with a fusion of folk and heavy rock. Fantastic stuff!

Led Zeppelin – Going to California Lyrics 22 years ago
Actually the song is full of Jungian symbolism - but I don't necesarilly think that's what it was written as. It just explains why WE find it so magnetic. It doesn't really matter wat it means - its one of their most beautiful songs.

Led Zeppelin – Darlene Lyrics 22 years ago
Err - my copy of Darlene contains the phrase "Got a pink carnation and a pickup track" I seem to remember that this phrase was also in Don Mclean's American Pie(?) Any idea what this phrase means (other than a guy with a van and a flower :)

Led Zeppelin – Bring It on Home Lyrics 22 years ago
Robert Plant's ability to perform blues songs verges on the genius. In the slow into to this track he actually mimics the natural tremello that was a feature of Sonny Boy Williamsons voice. Have a go yourself - play a copy of Bring It On Home by Sonny Boy Williamson and then play Zeppelin's version. You have, in a nutshell their uniqueness: the ability to persent largely traditional, blues based music in a way that was relevant for their time. Plant was an absolutely magificent vocalist.
