AFI – Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings) Lyrics 22 years ago
This song to me is about someone who only does and says things because they think it's what's cool now.

"Raise high monolithic statues so fragile as they fall
I am ever enthralled
Gaze, lie and smirk in time, your arrogance will suit you well
'Til fashion is dispelled"
Someone dresses and acts in such a way to be considered "cool. They think they are so high and mighty and that they don't care for others but when they fail they suddenly become so needy and vunerable. They can act as conceited and as invinceable as they like but that feeling of power will end as soon as that particular fad they are trying to follow does.

"As waves of plastic fame go out of fashion
You're going out, going out forever unknown
These waves of plastic fame go out of fashion
(These waves of plastic fame are drying up and I smile)
You're going out, going out forever unknown
(Because you're dying to become forever unknown, unkown)"
As soon as this fad ends, this person will once again end up as no one. And Davey will smile because he saw it coming all along.

"From above a rain of ashes descends
Anathema I will remain, forever will remain
From below, in my seclusion
Look up to the sky to see paper wings and watch them burn"
He will stand and do nothing as this person fails because they brought in on themselves by pretending to be someone they're not.

"Without habitation, you'll never find a soul inside
No life, but nothing's died
No lights, but quite the show (Just as long as no one ever knows
All motion is pantomime)"
Without sticking to one kind of persona no one will ever find out who you really are. You cannot die because you've never truly lived. You have no knowledge of what you are doing but you pretend you do and exagerate everything you think that particular fad is about, ending up looking quite stupid. It doesn't matter as long as no one finds out, you can just happily do what everyone else is doing to be cool.

"Dancing in the rain of descending ash
Dancing on your grave, I'll see you all falling
Dancing in the rain of descending ash
Dancing in your dust, I'll see you all falling
I'd stop it, had you a heart
I'd stop it, had you a heart"
This is how Davey feels about that person's failure. He's happy enough to "dance" on the metaphorical "grave"(the old fad they swore to live by). The last part is like him saying that they should just try to be who they are instead of someone completely fake if they actually cared about themselves.

This is a great, upbeat song and I really think that it has nothing to do with 9/11 but maybe he did use that incident as a metaphor for something completely different. Oh, and shame on you people who thought that Davey was sadistic enough to dance on the graves of the 9/11 victims simply because you don't know him. That's really dispicable to hear coming from fans of his music.

AFI – Wester Lyrics 22 years ago
AGHHH!!!! Someone else compared it to Romeo and Juliet!!! H20GOPunx, I agree completely with that. Except I highly doubt Romeo wore eyeliner so he might not have the "trails of black" down his face from the rain. This song's kind of sad and tragic like Romeo and Juliet but I still can't tie in the title. Hmmm.....

AFI – Two Of A Kind Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is clearly about Davey being in a relationship that is suffocating him. This person is bordering on stalking him and obsessed with him. Well, I can understand this devotion. If I had the oppertunity to date Davey Havok I might become a little possessive too. Oh, and people, this song isn't necessarily about a girl. Why do you all assume that? What's wrong with boys liking boys? Not a damn thing if you ask me.
*YUM* ;)

I think this song is about trying to get away from things that cause pain and suffering but having your own doubts try to stop you. The title seems to suggest the perfect human, someone so great they're impossible to be real.
This song is incrediable and Davey's voice is so. Fucking. Sexy. Mon dieu!!

AFI – The Boy Who Destroyed The World Lyrics 22 years ago
Everyone seems to think that this song is about the boy's loss of innocence but I don't neccessarily agree with that entirely. It seems to me that it's more like it's about the boy's loss of everything that makes him a boy. Like the world has taken away not just his innocence but also his right to be a kid. His love and his freedom, or as the song expresses, his "glow." The boy wants someone to save him and keep this from happening but in today's society, that's almost impossible.

AFI – Smile Lyrics 22 years ago
This is a song about how the world that Davey once loved now disgusts him.
He starts the song by singing about how much the world sickens him and how that he will only be truly happy when he destroys it himself. Then he really will "smile."

AFI – Morningstar Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree with Nikki-Nikkster on how it is a song where he is reaching out for support from others.

"I saw a star beneath the stairs
Glowing through the melting walls
Who will be the first to begin their fall?
Or will we become one?"
The "star beneath the stairs" is like the light that helps him get through his problems or the "melting walls" in his life. And I don't think it has anything to do with religion. When it says "who will be the first to begin their fall" that seems to be about who is going to crumble from all the pains and problems in their life and just give up or will they just both do it together.

"Am I the star beneath the stairs?
Am I the ghost upon the stage?
Am I your anything?"
The chorus is like Davey saying that is he helping that person get through any of their problems. It sounds like he's asking them if AFI's music is helping them because why else would he mention the stage? The "ghost" is him doubting himself and saying that the depressed person doesn't even notice that Davey is the one singing.

"I saw a star beneath the stairs
Glowing bright before descent
And in the morning there is nothing left
But what's inside of me."
This verse is Davey seeing a way out of his problems but not taking it. He waits too long and then when he tries to go through with it he realizes that the oppertunity is gone and all he has left is himself.

"And I don't want to die tonight; will you believe in me?
And I don't want to fall into the light.
Will you wish upon?
Will you walk upon me?
I don't want to die tonight. Will you."
This is like Davey saying that he's scared of what will happen to him if he fails. He wants reassurance that someone believes in him. The wishing and walking upon himself is Davey saying that he wants that person to let Davey help them and not to worry because he will always be there if he's needed.

I love this song sooo much. Davey has a gorgeous and sexy voice and I prefer his singing to his screaming. I could listen to this a million times and never get tired of it.

AFI – God Called In Sick Today Lyrics 22 years ago
This is such an amazing song with great enigmatic lyrics. I'm just going to have to guess its meaning, however. This song seems to be about all the confusion and unexpectedness in Davey's life.

"Let's admire the pattern forming.
Murderous filigree."
That seems to say kind of sarcastically, "Don't worry, we'll stand by and watch while you make the confusion twist even more and become finer and harder to detangle."

"I'm caught in the twisting of the vine.
Go ascend with ivy,climbing.
Ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbling behind. "
Davey then goes on to sing that he's caught in the middle of it as everyone else just rises above the tangled mess while he is left with the clean up.

"I can't help my laughter as she cries.
My soul brings tears to angelic eyes."
That seems to be about how he doesn't want to deal with this anymore and that he's not going to bother trying to solve other people's problems, that he's just going to let them deal with it themselves.

"Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully,
I'll let animosity unwind."
He doesn't want to let this problem to end the same way it seems destinated to, the most obvious way. He wants to wait for it to start to itself out.

"Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully.
I'll still feel the violence of the lines. "
This means that it doesn't really matter if the person tries to hide the truth from him, the "pages" of their mind, they will still do it to him and ending up hurting him just the same.

"Omnipotence, nurturing malevolence."
This means that trying to conrol everything at once can only lead to bad, painful things.

These lyrics could be deciphered as a bad relationship but I like to think of it more as arguments between friends with Davey being caught in the middle. I don't know. Maybe that's just because I like to think that I hate most love songs.

AFI – The Days Of The Phoenix Lyrics 22 years ago
I think this song is actually about AFI's dream of stardom before they became famous.
The first couple of lines is what they used to fantisize about with they were still very much unknown.
The second verse seems to be about how these dreams used to sooth the band and make them keep doing what they were doing and to not give up. The "ghost on the stage" and the "circle of rage" is Davey Havok when he was an unknown singer, the ghost representing how no one really saw him or knew who he was and the "circle of rage" is the screaming audience.
The chorus where Davey sings about "falling into yesterday" means that the band made their fantasies come true.
The "girl on the wall" is probably his dream girl, the one Davey knew he'd find when he became famous. The teenage "death" boys and girls are AFI's first fans. They're confused about their lives and themselves and depressed and using music as their escape from the world. They danced to the music, not really understanding it but loving it just the same.
The song title "Days of the Phoenix" represents the days when they were unknown and used to play at small concerts near their hometown. These were the days of carefree fantasy and real hope.
I love this song. I think it's sung so beautifully.

AFI – Catch A Hot One Lyrics 22 years ago
There's a lot of pain and anger expressed in these lyrics. The first part seems to be about Davey talking to someone, calling that person selfish for trying to hurt themselves just for attention. The fly whose "form was scorned" when it was learning to fly probably meant that it was doing it wrong right from the start and that it could never learn how to fly because of this. The last parts of the song seems to express how that person thought everyone was against her or him and therefore, made it come true in the end.
Sorry just my little interpretation. Love the song, though.
