Great song, here. What starts off as a simple ode to the alcohol the speaker is drinking turns into an observation of the city around him, keeping with the religious imagery The Hold Steady follows. He sees Jesus, the best things about the world and faith and honesty in some things (young lovers) and Judas, the worst things in the world, in the violence, crime and heartache. |

| The Decemberists – The Bagman's Gambit Lyrics

I hate to come in here and shit all over everyone's previous comments but I think a lot of people have misinterpreted this song. In Soviet Russia, especially in the 20's and 30's during collectivization of property, as the Soviet Union struggled to become a solvent nation, a 'bagman' was someone who would take goods from the city to the countryside (and vice versa) because things like shoes, light bulbs, food, etc were scarce. This was illegal and the USSR came down hard on people who made their living like this, if they were caught. It seems to me that the speaker of this song is one of those bagmen who gets mixed up with a member of an oppositional party (which were outlawed) or possibly working for a foreign government. He falls in love, she uses him and drops him once he convinces the governmental officals who are detaining her to let her go. It's pretty sad, but an absolutely fascinating scene. |

Did nobody notice that this song is about dealing with life issues while being on antidepressants?
The singer, I think, went to a therapist and was perscribed paxil or wellbutrin or something, and even though taking it helps him deal with it, it deadens his emotions entirely.

| Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Me and Mia Lyrics

I always figured that this song was in second person for a reason. Ted (or whoever) is watching a girl with an eating disorder and it's destroying her life. He realizes that she's struggling with it but can't 100% identify or help her, but she's going to doctors and talking to her parents and it's not helping.
"Not doctors, not your mom and dad but me and Mia, Ann and Anna know how hard you try."
-He and her friends are the only ones who know what she's really going through. |

I realize that this isn't what was on the writer's mind (it happened afterward) but this song reminds me of September 11th, and someone who is describing the aftermath.
His city is still breathing, it's still surviving, but barely.
"Buildings gone missing like teeth" and sidewalks sparkling with broke glass is pretty self-explanatory. He's missing someone, maybe someone who died.
I know it's not 'correct', but it's what I think about every time I hear it. |

the guy who posted about the russian bit was right. i always felt that battlescars was what the guy was thinking about during the war, and on the way home (and when I finally wash ashore, I'm coming back to kiss the girl I kissed before, etc) and shooting stars was what actually happened. pretty sad, indeed |
