I don't know if the speciffic details of his life nessicarilly have to relate to the song. I always took it to be about a guy who moved away from Alice Childress, and maybe she's more naive or sensitive than him so he tries to comfort her a lot, but the reality is he's very lonely and is getting mugged and maybe wants to give up. And maybe the fact that he has to reassure her that the world is still good is whats keeping him going or questioning everything. |

Emaline is a girl who lives most of her life in her mind. Maybe she's a bit absent minded but totally a dreamer. The singer has to keep a realistic view on things and tries to ground her. She's a hassle to keep grounded, but maybe also financially because the singer has to deal with money and she's less of a help. I thought if the line was "people like you see black and white" then it makes sense that people can't understand hteir relationship because on the outside they could seem like a poor pair. But now I don't know. I guess it also works as a horse, but its kinda dissapointing. |

This song is just completely about debauchery on more extreme levels (sex, drugs, alchohol), but he relates it all to very innocent-enough things like jellybeans and chocolate milk to illicit a much stronger feeling of empathy and understanding.
In doing all these things he's making his life inbalanced and maybe ruining chances he's had with people. He's only asking that you forgive his slightly greedy tendencies as human nature. |

I like how Ben Kweller's lyrics are written more to fit the music than to mean much. People gather their own meanings from songs anyway, and the vaugeness of some of his lyrics almost makes it easier to make his songs get more personal. |
