| Lifehouse – Simon Lyrics | 22 years ago |

I love to hear the stories behind the songs that these bands write, but just because EVEN THE BAND says this song is about a specific thing, doesn't necessarily negate the symbolic content that might reveal itself to someone else. However, a song cannot mean ANYTHING. For instance, Lifehouse's 'Hanging By A Moment' doesn't have anything to do with Raging Cannibals in Istanbul. So to say a work of art can mean anything makes it essentially meaningless, doesn't it? Anyway, my initial thoughts when first hearing this song was about a child who never really felt love. The cage, being the crib, was the only place where the infant felt really safe from the insanity that raged around it. The song seems to be told from a perspective of a loving person who could never really do enough..perhaps an older brother. The brother is imparting the little bit of advice he can, telling his brother to watch his back, because no one else will. Such is the case in abusive families, where the children are forced to become bitter and hardened early on to survive. Surviving from the bullies of the world, whether its on the playground or in the home. Anyway, thats just my thought. As for the biblical reference..I think thats a bit far-fetched. I mean, the song is called Simon. First of all, Simon was ASHAMED to carry the cross, and feared persecution by the crowd. He was no great man. He didn't help Jesus willingly, the centurions impressed him into their service after Jesus fell the second time on the road to Golgotha. And how has Simon felt the same? We know nothing of Simon's life, surely nothing of persecution or suffering under the pagan rule of the Romans. Jesus and Simon share little in common other than the road to Calvary. Again, if you MUST tell other people that their interpretations are incorrect, at least back up your own interpretation with better evidence than: "Duh..it from the bible..dur.." It detracts from the positive atmosphere of the site, and it makes YOU look like an idiot. If you don't know what the song is about, or you don't have an interpretation, then just read what everyone else has to say and be enlightened. Don't act like a jerk. |

| The Goo Goo Dolls – Black Balloon Lyrics | 22 years ago |

An interview with the Goo Goo Dolls ( I apologize in advance, I can't remember where I saw it..I believe MTV ), revealed that the song is about a friend of the band's, obviously female, who died from a heroin overdose. I seem to remember that also she did have a baby, and that the baby did die as a result. For the band, thats what this song is about. However, I do believe that songs can be interpreted differently, and there is definitely a theme of a mutual friendship and perserverence, with an undertone of love. ' A thousand other boys could never reach you / How could I have been the one / ' The guy's mystified, as most men are, when a woman loves them. The later lines reveal that she obviously has some severe problems though, but he doesn't care. 'And there's no time left for losing / When you stand they fall ' Again, a theme of savoring every moment, a typical thought pattern for lovers. ' I'll become what you became to me ' I think that line in and of itself says it all. To be everything to one person as they are to you is what love is all about. At least, thats the way it should be. Total commitment. Bottom line, this is an excellent song, with deep undertones of pain, hope, and love. I just wish it had been made under happier circumstances. |
