The Offspring – You're Gonna Go Far, Kid Lyrics 15 years ago
Maybe I was biased since the first time I heard this song on the radio the DJ said something about how it was politcal. But I've always thought it was about Karl Rove. It's about the guy behind the scenes who quietly manipulates the masses and turns them against people.

Until the last few years nobody really gave him the credit he deserved for getting Bush elected "and no one really knew, it was really only you". But he was the one who came up with the plan to use wedge issues like gay marriage and abortion to turn social conservatives against opponents of Bush. "another clever word sets off an unsuspecting heard" - the evangelicals and social conservatives didn't realize they were being manipulated by Rove - the man behind the curtain - for political gain.

"with a thousand lies and a good disguise, hit 'em right between the eyes" - this refers to the politics of personal destruction. the 'swift boating' tactics used against Rove's enemies.

"now dance fucker dance, he never had a chance" refers to the political opponent trying to defend himself against the attacks.

Finally, pundits have referred to Rove as the "boy genius" for years - "you're gonna go far, kid".

Anyone else hear it that way?

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics 17 years ago
I basically agree with what amygrl said about the catholic school thing. To me "fear is the heart of love" means that it can be scary to be in love, because if you really love someone you become scared of being separated from them in death, and he believes that love can transcend death.

And I guess this can be taken as a darker interpretation of the song, but by "I'll follow you into the dark" I think he means that they've lived such a full life together and become so much a part of each other ("You and me, have seen everything to see") that even if death is just a solitary nothingness, he will be there with her just because of the strong connection they made in life.

Queens of the Stone Age – Go With The Flow Lyrics 21 years ago
The key (and best) couplet of this song is "but i want something good to die for/to make it beautiful to live". He just broke up with a girl who won't commit and he's saying he can "go with the flow" and continue with superficial relationships, but he's tired of that and he'd rather throw himself completely into an intense love. And the intense love is the "something good to die for".

O.A.R. – Black Rock Lyrics 21 years ago
I really like OAR's music but I'm not too sure about the band's lifestyle. The first time I really listened to the words to this song though I thought it was about heroin. Black rock is a common slang term for heroin. Read through the lyrics again. It really makes sense. Some of my friends have also heard this same thing from different sources. The most convincing line though is: "and when you are scared no more/you reach your hand out and just open the door/and that's just what we're doing tonight." You can obviously interpret this as a concrete statement about reaching out and opening the front door and going outside, but I think its double meaning is reaching out your arm to shoot up. Again, I don't know about their lifestyle and I could be completely wrong, but you have to admit, it makes sense.
