This song is a tribute to the crew of the Solomon Browne lifeboat, who lost their lives in the 1981 Penlee lifeboat disaster. |

Lovely song, and, contrary to popular opinion, I think the use of archaic whose meaning is slightly opaque actually adds to the gothic ambience of the music rather than detracts from it.
Anyway, the credits at the bottom are amusingly erroneous - I think they've got this page confused with the song 'Lorelei' by the Comeback Kid. Oops. |

Yeh, on seeing the title I assumed it was an Edgar Allen Poe reference, but I think you're right it is mainly harking back to the mythological association between ravens and death. If anything, Poe is in fact alluding to the same thing in his poem.
Oh, and p.s.: what a totally awesome song! |

I think what makes this song so effective is that, although it is very clearly talking primarily about God, and the 'relationship' of faith in Christ, it draws upon elements of human relationships, and the emotional significance of feeling close to a person, to illustrate what it means to have intimacy with the Divine through Jesus Christ. In that sense, the 'God' aspect of the song is sort of 'take it or leave it', since the elements of experience from human relationships will still resonate with people of other faiths or none. |

These lyrics contain some excellent and very poignant personal reflections on the heart of the gospel. Also, the song provides adequate proof for any self-respecting music-fan that death-metal can be beautiful. |

| Avenged Sevenfold – M.I.A. Lyrics

It seems to me to be a fairly straightforward song in protest against the Iraq war (although it is true that it never specifies where in particular the fighting is going on). Perhaps trying to bring in the possible religious significance of it with lines like "Pray to God that our side is right" and "...in the name of God and country" - maybe a subtle dig at flag-waving, Bible-belt Republicanism. I guess this character they've created is meant to be just some guy who's caught in the middle of it and horrified by what he's seeing/taking part in ("Some are scared others killing for fun, I shot a mother in front of her son."). I think it brings across the tragedy of war very well, in that the protagonist of the song is seen to be very remorseful for what he's been a part of ("I walk the city lonely, memories that haunt..."). Fantastic song too - possibly my favourite by Avenged Sevenfold. |

| Extol – The Death Sedative Lyrics

Well, that's my best attempt to decipher the end bit.
It makes sense of the sleeve note for the song, which just reads '...A Heroin Lullaby.'
It would seem (assuming my lyrics are right - if anyone has any corrections please feel free to help out) that the song is about the world (in the Biblical sense of the word) and it's many addictions that distract us and pull us away from relationship with God, and finishes by reminding us that we all need Jesus as none of these things will satisfy us. |

| Extol – Tears Of Bitterness Lyrics

This is probably my favourite Extol song lyrics-wise. Tells of a genuine moment of crisis in faith, where everything seems to be crashing down around you - very reminiscent of many of the Psalms of David, including Psalm 22 (from which the quote, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" is taken). I love the honesty about feeling betrayed ("God if you really exist illuminate the path that leads me back"), but also the reminder of God's ultimate goodness at the end, again following the pattern of the Psalms.
One cannot help but feel lost and confused in a world of such pain and strife, but God is real and God truly loves you, and longs for you to be free and restored to be with him. That I believe is the truth at the heart of this epic, but honest, psalm of anguish. |

| Extol – Christianity Misunderstood Lyrics

It's more about how people, both inside and outside the church, sometimes end up treating the Christian faith as if it is simply a set of religious rules to be obeyed. This, as Extol like to remind us in this and many of their other songs, is not really the truth of Christianity at all. The truth of Christianity is about a loving God who willingly gives himself as an act of grace to set us free from our inability to follow such rules.
Grace is a wonderful concept - I'm glad Extol like it as much as I do. |

I wonder if the song refers to the same family break-up as described in Honor Thy Father on Train of Thought, but, rather than being an angry song directed at the cheating step-father, it's a comforting song directed towards the mother. |

The drug addiction theme seems to make sense - the song title could be a reference to a method of smoking opium common in Hong Kong's drug dens in the days of the Walled City. Perhaps Epica have read the book by Jackie Pullinger - who knows...

| Pain of Salvation – Dedication Lyrics

It is fairly clear that this song is about one of the characters (I'm not sure whether or not it's the boy or the girl) losing their 'beloved grandfather'.
If you look slightly more carefully at the lyrics it is noticeable that there is a play on a traditional technique in poetry for creating emotion in the reader, known as 'pathetic fallacy' - using description of the surroundings to add to the description of the emotion of the central character. So in a lot of fiction and poetry (and also film to a certain extent) if the central character is sad it will be a bleak kind of day/rainy/dark. Daniel Gildenlow turns this kind of imagery on its head - the character here is asking 'why this deep blue sky?' and 'why that sunny sky?' which in a converse way almost makes you feel for him/her more. It is like the character is wishing the rest of the world was sad with him - which, with some introspection and hindsight, is actually a much more honest way of representing how we react to loss and pain in our self-centred human lives than pathetic fallacy can ever be.
A beautiful and emotive song from a vocal and lyrical master. |

I always thought it was about God.
It's mainly because of the thing in the video where, at the bit when he sings "and i'm bleedin' and i'm bleedin' and i'm bleedin' right before the lord", a tongue of fire appears above his head. Subtle, ey?! |

I love that idea about the fact that even in death there is hope, cos we know we'll be going to a better place. Personally, I am a Christian and I think that when we dioe we'll go to heaven and a perfect world with no suffering, pain, or anything, but this song really captures that idea of the pain of 'transition' between life and death. |

This poem is about how the world has become lost and misled ("Oh the hymns of angels, Suffer over the stench of the 21st century").
Just a few things I don't understand:
1) What is it he says after "A break from the deranged world of..."?
2) What does he mean by "Plotting out the death of art"?
3) What is that middle section ("And I went over ... called your bluff") all about? |

I agree with all u Jesus freaks out there!
It's interesting tho, cos I'd never actually thought of this suicide idea, and it sounds quuite promising in terms of the actual meaning of the song.
As to whether or not they are a 'Christian' band, well, I don't know, and probably never will, but, whether or not they want 2 b associated with the 'Contemporary christian Music' media, this song is quite oviously rooted in a faith in Christ. |

I love this song so much. Kevin Max is a truly amazing singer ... just out of interest do you ppl all have his album 'stereotype Be'? Trust me, it rules.
Neways, this song is both about Jesus Words and Jesus blood, just 2 get rid of ne disagreements that seem 2 b cropping up. Not only that it is about the whole message of the bible. All of the Old Testament, when studied in detail, all seems to lead up to the Life and Death of Jesus. This song reflects the fact that in Jesus there is,love, truth, hope and a life worth living. |
