Wilco – The Late Greats Lyrics 18 years ago
I gotta disagree with you, loldoctor; Jeff regularly admits in interviews to being a fan of "the greats," which usually ARE lesser-known artists. I believe I read somewhere that the "Kay-Settes" were a little side band or maybe imaginary band that he made up with drummer Glenn Kotche (I may be a bit off. though). The song is honest: he believes that the best things are yet to come, or rather, never to come. At least never to be heard by the public ear (nor even the strict indie ear). It's a fantastic and true concept, like most of Jeff Tweedy's concepts...

I might have agreed with you on the indie culture mockery even if I hadn't read so often about Jeff's love for obscure greats, but I mean, listen to the song: the music is completely unpretentious, unironic, and assured - it's just good ol' rock and roll with that Americana twang Wilco does so well.

If you want to hear a great song that REALLY reflects this "indie scene" while simultaneously embracing it playfully , check out LCD Soundsystem's "Losing My Edge" from their self-titled album. Talk about irony. James Murphy is another songwriting genius like Jeff Tweedy even if their music is completely different.

Oh, and the indie scene didn't pop up in the past few years, man. There were weirdos that lived next door to your mom and dad in the 70's who wouldn't be caught dead listening to the Carpenters or Simon and Garfunkel.

Wilco – Reservations Lyrics 18 years ago
My first important breakup WAS this song. It was literally playing in the background, and it went well with the situation. Interestingly enough, it was this song, a song I heard for the first time during a painful time, that introduced me to Wilco, who is now my favorite band and undoubtedly will always be. I heard Wilco play this in Paris in March 2005, very stripped down, all raw emotion and Jeff's convincing and passionate voice, the lights were dim and all of a sudden I was getting broken up with all over again. But in the most beautiful way you can imagine. I don't know if I was crying tears of joy or of sorrow. Later when I met the band and shared crepes with them on the streets of Montmartre, I was all smiles, though.

Wilco – I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Lyrics 19 years ago
What does this song mean to me? A fucking lot. It's possibly Wilco's most ingenius song to date. I definitely agree with the idea that this song has to do with alcoholism, especially with just the way it's arranged, with sort of sloppy beats and of course Jeff's lazy (but PERFECT) voice, but i think it might also be referring to another type of overindulgence - American consumerism. It's just a thought, and it's unlikely since the rest of the song so obviously is more about a romance. But the fact that he uses the word "American" might be a statement to the fact that he thinks Americans are all, well, pigs. Including himself. We Americans don't realize how many things we take for granted, and here, that could even mean water (hence the use of "aquarium"), one of the most abundant resources on the planet. And when he says DISPOSABLE dixie cup drinking, he could be implying that we waste a lot of shit. Just because the label says it's disposable doesn't mean we should so carelessly toss it out. I don't know. Maybe he's talking about the fact that alcoholism is more predominant in America than any other country. Or maybe "American" and "aquarium" just sounded right together (and oh, they do). I love when Jeff throws in the consonance. Mm mm. Whatever he's trying to say here, he sure is acheiving what he's undoubtedly trying to do: break my heart with his brilliant work.

Wilco – Theologians Lyrics 19 years ago
i'm pretty sure it means "illiterate, faithful light" - just as the following lyrics suggest. inlitterati=illiterate; lumen=light; fidei=faithful
Maybe in latin adjectives end in i?

I love this song. I read an article somewhere in which Jeff was saying that he basically just thought the whole concept was funny. I like that he's honest about that. It's silly, if you think about it - "Theologians don't know nothin' bout my soul" sounds so stubborn and proud, not to mention grammatically incorrect! It's true, though, what he's trying to say; no matter how brilliant someone is, they won't ever know all that you have inside of you - it's unique only to you, especially if you want to mask it. Jeff has an obsession with being true to his soul and not letting anyone get in the way of that - just look how that whole Yankee Hotel Foxtrot ordeal turned out! The record company tried to "compromise something that was a part of [his] soul," and hell no he didn't let them. Because why? Because they don't know NOTHIN' about Wilco's soul! But thanks to his genius songwriting and musical skills, WE know a little bit more and more about it with each listen of each Wilco song. God i love that man.

Björk – Desired Constellation Lyrics 19 years ago
the first thing i noticed about this song (besides how GORGEOUS it was) was how, in the first line, she used the word "tricky." I know it may be going way out on a limb to say this, but i think it could be a reference to THE tricky (as in her ex). Yes, i'm probably looking too much into it, but she could have used another word in that paragraph...she had to know that it would evoke thoughts like mine...any thoughts?

Björk – Cocoon Lyrics 19 years ago
I somewhat disagree with Phrogex. True, Bjork is a brilliant songwriter, and to someone who deeply respects her, it might seem impossible that she would be so "shallow" as to write a song about sex. But one cannot deny that sex as spiritual connection is one of the predominant themes throughout the entire album. Is that so shallow? To Bjork, sex isn't some petty, dirty deed. It can lead to heartbreak and even trauma ("Harm of Will", anyone?), but when done right it is a beautiful thing that can be just as beautifully reflected upon. Sure, you can go deeper (heh heh) and say that there are other meanings and parallels unrelated to sex, which makes the song all the more brilliant, i think, but not any more "meaningful." Does that make sense? It's hard to interpret this song also because the music is so beautiful and dreamy and innocent. It's possible that Bjork is using this happy music, though, as a contrast to lyrics that imply not-so-happy things, such as maybe what Phrogex said about being "emotionally raped." Or, another possibility, she's just using the innocent music to make a statement that sex CAN be innocent and beautiful and playful, and shouldn't be looked down upon for those reasons. Also, those sporatic "click-clangs" in the background sound like swingsets to me. That struck a chord in me. Who knows. The woman is and always has been a complete mystery, which is why we all like her so much. Maybe she just thought it sounded really damn pretty? I'd love her just the same if i found out that were the case.

Mandalay – It's Enough Now Lyrics 21 years ago
I think she's singing about someone who loves her, but for one reason or another, won't take measures to show her. Maybe there are obstacles in this someone's way; either way, she's fed up of waiting. She's trying to give this person up, but it's hard to give up someone that she secretly loves as well.

Does anyone agree with me?
