This was a hard song for me to translate so I'm not even going to try or else I'll sound like an idiot! However, I don't think this song is mocking Christianity...I don't think Davey would mock religion like that. But who knows, maybe he would. I think this song is more about someone who Davey cares about very much and will do anything for. Awesome lyrics...what more can we expect from AFI?...AOD drowning is their best cd in my opinion. .A. |

Okay, I don't know if I'm going to be able to get this out real well because I'm horrible at explaining, but I'm going to try... I think this may be about Davey, Jade, or whoever this was meant for being confused about wheather or not they want to live.. "I'm caught in the twisting of the vine" -He's stuck in this horrible life that sucks and he can't escape from. "Go ascend with ivy,climbing. Ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbling behind." -He is talking to a girl...telling her to go ahead without him and leave him there to die...kinda like...go on, you won't miss me..life will be better witout me anyways. "I can't help my laughter as she cries. My soul brings tears to angelic eyes." -It says in the bible that angels don't cry...and I think its saying that after he told this girl his plan of committing suicide, or giving up or something she started crying(she may be an angel in his eyes)...and he laughs at the fact that somebody..let alone an angel actually cares about him and is crying at the fact of loosing him. "Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully, I'll let animosity unwind. Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully." -He's changing his mind and decides he wants to change this "tragic story" to a happy ending...instead of killing himself, he's going to change his life around and find a way to be happy. "I'll still feel the violence of the lines." -No matter what happens he will never forget about how his life used to be and even though he is going to change his life around, the pain he once felt will still be there and will never go away. "I can't stand my laughter as they cry. My soul brings tears to angelic eyes." -This sort of belongs before the part where he decides to change the ending of the story...he realizes that he is actually making an angel cry and can't stand the fact of that person being sad. He sort of finds a reason for living..he realizes that if he kills himself, he may ruin this persons like as well because they care a lot about him. He figures out that other people actually do care about him. "And miles away my mother cries" -Hey! This girl is his mom! Either that or his mom is sad also along with this girl. "Omnipotence, nurturing molevolence" -Alright...I may have some trouble with this one....I don't quite get it but I think it has something to do with the title. The title God called in sick is like...since God is sick that day there is nobody to do the job of watching over everything and making sure there is no evil in the world. I think the person that wants to commit suicide(Davey, Jade, whoever) was taken over by some sort of evilness because God had called in sick...the evilness was inside of him..causing him to make him want to kill inself...it was very powerful(omnipotence) yet it comforted him telling him that after he went trough with it, all of his pain and suffering would end....nurturing him(nurturing molevolence). Luckily he was able to change his life around for the better before the evilness took over him totally and caused him to actually kill himself. Wow that was a little difficult! This song is so awesome. I love this song. I blast it up so loud in my headphones and fall asleep to it. Davey is amazing. |

Davey and Jade turn me on in a major way....if you agree then you rock. I agree with the suicide theory...it sounds pretty correct in my opinion...all other interpretations sound great too. I've also noticed that AFI doesn't have any sites or anything about what the lyrics REALLY mean. I thought that was interesting because most bands usually do...it's so cool how all of their songs can have so many different meanings and I guess we are supposed to decide for ourselves what they mean. I guess it might ruin everything if they just flay out told us what the lyrics meant. -Alli |

I haven't read any of the comments so sorry if I said anything that has already been said...I think this song has to do with Lucifer and how Davey relates to him...here is how I interpret the song... "I saw a star beneath the stairs . Glowing through the melting walls." ..Lucifer(the devil if you didnt already know) is the star and the stairs are the 'stairway to heaven.' The melting walls might be the flames from hell or somehting. "Who will be the first to begin their fall . Or will we become one?" ...Lucifer was once an angel in heaven. He was thrown out of heaven because he tried to overpower God and sort of caused some angels to 'rebel' against God...they became Lucifers 'angels' or followers. Lucifer was punished and forced to go to hell...so he and his 'angels' had a war against God. In this line, he is asking who will win/lose, or will God forgive him and let him come back to heaven. "Am I the star beneath the stairs?" ..He is asking God if he is punishing him in some way like God punished Lucifer...maybe he thinks God is against him for some reason. "Am I the ghost upon the stage?" ..Davey refers to himself as a ghost in days of the phoenix also...I think this probably goes much deeper for Davey personally but I think in this it just feels like even though all of his 'angels' are counting on him and he is sort of in the spotlight in this situation(like you usually are on stage), he feels invisible(as a ghost)...like i said there is probably a deeper meaning but im trying my best! "Am I your anything?" ..He is asking God if he means anything to him because he probably feels like God doesn't care about him. "I saw a star beneath the stairs . Glowing bright before descent." ..In the beginning, when he first started this war with God, he felt proud and he was 'shining' so brightly because he felt he was being 'rebellious' or standing up for what he believed. But then when he was banished to hell...his light descended and he was no longer proud of what he did. "And in the morning, there is nothing left . But whats inside of me." ..Again, sort of the same idea..after everything, all his hard work, he was not anymore powerful than he hoped to be and did it all for nothing. And all that is left are his bitter feelings of anger towards himself. "And I dont want to die tonight . Will you beleive in me?" ..He is either asking God for forgiveness and hoping for a chance to go back to heaven...sort of saying he made a mistake...OR...he is asking the 'angels' that fought with him if they still want him to be their ruler and if they believe in him enough to do it. "Will you wish upon me . Will you walk upon me" ..Goes with the last part about asking his followers if they will accept him as their ruler or if they will walk all over him...or treat him like it is his fault that they are no longer in heaven and it is his fault they lost the war against God. Okay...thats what i think...sorry this was so long! |

Not quite sure what to make of this song except for "Like a devil meant for better things" Im not sure if this is it but it sounds pretty correct to me...Lucifer(the devil) was once an angel in heaven...he questioned Gods authority once and sort of caused some other angels to rebel against him. God punished Lucifer by sending him out of heaven. Lucifer believed that being in heaven meant he could not be an independent thinker and God got angry for not having full faith in him. He might be talking about this when he says "meant for better things" because i think "the devil" was just trying to think for himself or something along those lines... thats just what i think though |

I really like this song....this is what I interpreted it as.... "Lie in the comfort of sweet calamity with nothing left to lose" -The depression of being alone and depressed has become so familiar that he is comforted by it. "Lie in the darkness...im slowly drowned to sleep" -again...darkness, despair...waiting to fall asleep. "Three tears I've saved for you" -He may be saying, look what has happened to me..maybe saving the tears for someone who has done this to him. Someone he hates. "Id retrace the steps that led me here but nothing lives behind m" -He would go back and fix everything that hes done wrong but he cant go back or there is nothing there now. "so i lie in this field bathed in the light that loves me" -He shelters himself in a place where he feels safe and secure "Will you be my beloved? Will you help me to get through?" -he is saying, 'will you love me and help me get through these hard times' "Will you be my destruction? Will you help me to be through?" -this is kinda weird...i think he may be talking about suicide...if he wanted to kill himself, would you help and support it and 'help to be through' as it says |

I havent read any comments so im sure this has been said already but i dont care. I think this is about their days of playing at the Phoenix. I dont really understand the first part, however. Maybe the candle wax and crushed velvet and dried flowers were all decorations in the Phoenix. "the cicle of rage the ghost on the stage apeared" -himself obviously. He refers himself to a ghost in morningstar also. I think he may consider himself to be a ghost for some reason. As if nobody can see him when he is onstage. "Time was so tangible I'll never let it go -how he remembers it and never wants to forget "The girl on the wall always waited for me She was always smiling" -I remember hearing somewhere that there were pictures of smiling girls in the Phoenix...im not sure if thats true, but thats ok... "the teenage death boys/girls....everyone was dancing..nothing could touch us then...no one could change us then...everyone was dancing" -anyone could go there and not feel unwelcomed...nobody could harm you and you can just dance and be free to do what you want. "no one can see me" -sort of the same idea I think the general idea is they love playing there and they miss it and it was a great experience that they can never let go of. |
