Los Campesinos! – Avocado, Baby Lyrics 12 years ago
I love the metaphor of the avocado for him being able to cope with emotional pain and heartbreak and apparently being unfazed. I think he's saying that unlike his friends he won't "crack from love's weight" because he's the avocado with the heart of stone.

Salacia was apparently the wife of Neptune and goddess of the sea in Roman mythology. Delphinius is a constellation which was (according to the myth) put there by Neptune to thank the dolphin who helped him find Salacia. I think the "every fire in Delphinius" is a reference to romantic star gazing. I guess like a lot of their songs it's about being unlucky in love.

Mystery Jets – Someone Purer Lyrics 13 years ago
It sounds like he's considering whether he might be/might have been reincarnated. I think he comes to the conclusion that he is only going to live once so he'd may as well enjoy it. The album seems to be partly pondering what happens after death. Great song, anyway.

Animal Kingdom – Chalk Stars Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about being depressed - "and all you want is a rainbow, and all you get is the rain"
and in particular feeling depressed at night - "when the cold light of day is sleeping at the wheel" "when the sun goes down".

I saw these guys last year supporting Snow Patrol, thought they were really good.

Joy Division – Disorder Lyrics 15 years ago
"It's getting faster, moving faster now, it's getting out of hand
On the tenth floor, down the back stairs, it's a no man's land
Lights are flashing, cars are crashing, getting frequent now"

sandy2007 suggested this could be about the J G Ballard novel Crash. I've been reading J G Ballard's 1970s novel High Rise, which is about the residents of an exclusive tower block who become feral and territorial. The 10th floor is the floor where the services like shops and a swimming pool are in the block, and it is a no-mans land between the different groups in the tower block. The lifts are broken so they have to go up and down the stairs which can be dangerous. The book made me think of the song as I know Ian Curtis read J G Ballard's work, naming a song (Atrocity Exhibition) after one of his books. My thoughts, anyway, on what this verse might mean.

We Are Scientists – Textbook Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about being the kind of person who hasn't had much relationship experience "you're not supposed to know anything" and has read all the books/magazines but "having every question answered isn't going to help at all". Then they're in this situation which they recognise from what they've read/heard from other people, but he's realising that it's not enough because every situation is different and he actually doesn't have a clue what he's doing.

Finger Eleven – Sick Of It All Lyrics 18 years ago
The sullen version from the website is very good, it is very emotional, think it was taken down a couple of years ago though. I kind of see this as like being in the depths of depression and wondering how much you would be prepared to change and let go of to feel happier.

Dashboard Confessional – So Beautiful Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about someone who you're friends with, or maybe more than friends with in the past, who goes away and meets new people and makes 'new ties' with new people. Then they come back but they've changed and they've become superficial.

The lines: "You've got them all convinced, but I know it so well
That you could list your friends, but you can't count on them" says a lot, she's got all these new friends, but none of them are proper friends, they're all shallow like her. Sounds like he is having a go at her for being so shallow and superficial, but he's taken in by her as well and still thinks she's so beautiful.

The Rakes – Suspicious Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's just a song about the different thoughts people have nowadays when travelling on the Tube. I don't think it's specifically about Jean Charles de Menezes, just any Asian person travelling on the Tube, especially carrying a backpack, who gets suspicious looks. You can feel the tension on the Tube and see the suspicious eyes all the time now.

Maxïmo Park – Your Urge Lyrics 18 years ago
I saw them play last night and Paul said after this song that it was about shame, and whether or not you should feel it. That makes sense to me. So it's about one night stands and affairs and how they make you feel, or should make you feel.

The Rakes – The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect Lyrics 18 years ago
I saw The Rakes a couple of weeks ago, and heard the album version, then got hold of the 18 minute version. Both versions are brilliant.

"You slag off america in the pub, say the war was sh*te then in the club, drink some buds and smoke some marlboro lights" is the best bit, in my opinion.

Maxïmo Park – Girls Who Play Guitars Lyrics 18 years ago
I guess she's not had the guts to actually dump him when she's got bored and he's just realised that she's been cheating. She's extremely selfish (it's her life and her life is worth living) and even though he realises that, he still wants her: "You could pretend and I wouldn't know
I could be who you wanted in the dark".

Brilliant song, I love it.

Transpennine is a rail company in the North East, yes. http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/ I've been on it when travelling to Durham.

I don't exactly get the rest of the song though.

Bloc Party – Plans Lyrics 18 years ago
"Been training vipers to come for you
In your sleep"

Has anyone else ever read that Sherlock Holmes story where the man is murdered by sending a poisonous snake through the ventilator in his room? It stopped me from sleeping for weeks as a kid. That line reminds me of that.

The View – Skag Trendy Lyrics 19 years ago
I'd like to say that this song is a serious song about homelessness and drop-outs from society. However the accent and the riff do make it difficult to take this seriously, but that's no bad thing. Damn cool song.

Guillemots – madeup love song #43 Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is a song about the fairytale aspects of love, the 'sparks and shining dragons' and the knights-in-shining-armour type love.

I love this song, possibly the best song I heard last year and I'm still not fed up of it. Reminds me of sunny days walking through the park.

Possibly it is satirical, but it could also be perfectly pure. I agree, it does seem that the everyday things in life have become deeply significant and romantic things because the singer is in love.

Little Man Tate – Sexy In Latin Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a really good song, very catchy. It kind of reminds me of Disco 2000 by Pulp. What's the relevance of Latin to this song though?

Snow Patrol – Crazy In Love Lyrics 19 years ago
I hate it when Beyonce does it, but I think it actually sounds quite good when Snow Patrol do it. The rap sounds awesome. Was it originally done for a BBC Live Lounge cover? I noticed the reference to the BBC in the rap and there's a version of Run on the Live Lounge CD.

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly – War Of The Worlds Lyrics 19 years ago
This song reminds me of how I've lost contact with my friends from school in the last 6 months. Someone who I believed was my closest friend has hardly spoken to me and no longer has time for me, yet I know that if she wants something she will get back in touch. This song could describe a relationship, or a friendship.

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly – Whitewash Is Brainwash Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is so true. Big Brother and reality TV in general is not what life is about. People watch so-called 'reality' TV in order to avoid the harsh reality of life. The lyrics are brilliant. Flowers and chocolates and cards refers to how commercialised the most pure thing of all, love, has become. Valentine's day is all about making money. Everything has become the same, everyone shops at Ikea, but they think it is this amazing individual style. I suppose it is about how the masses are fooled into believing that they are individual, with their sheep-like existence.

Sam is a cynic, but in the best way possible.

The Cure – The Lovecats Lyrics 20 years ago
This was one of my exboyfriend and I's songs... but I still love the song, even if he turned out to be a j*rk. It's so cute, and a great song at the same time.

Third Eye Blind – How's It Going to Be Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's about loving someone but knowing that you can't go on like you are. It reminds me of my first love, who I realised that I had to walk away from when I heard this song.
"Before you take a swing, I wonder, what are we fighting for?" - reminds me of my first love, because he physically attacked me once for no reason, and also of arguing for basically no reason with my ex, just because we wanted to hurt each other.

Then there's the bit: "I wanna get myself back in again..." which is one of my favourite parts of any song in the world. It's saying 'even though I know this has to end, and I'm trying to tell myself I don't care, I still love you and I only wish it could be back how it was before.'

One of the best songs ever...

Pixies – Where Is My Mind? Lyrics 21 years ago
I first heard the song from a friend about 18 months ago as the Placebo cover, then recently my friend's ex boyfriend gave her some Pixies cds, and they're great cds, but then my friend went to a party and saw her ex-boyfriend kissing another girl, and she turned on this song, turned the volume right up and sang along and forgot all about him, so now she's always playing this song on repeat whenever I see her.

I've seen Fight Club and it does make a good ending to the film, but I loved the song way before I saw Fight Club.

R.E.M. – At My Most Beautiful Lyrics 21 years ago
I just love this song. I don't know why. I just really do. It's got amazing lyrics and amazing music. I don't totally know what it means, it's just the small things about love.

Creed – Higher Lyrics 21 years ago
I love the intro. It's probably the nicest song I've got to play on guitar. I bought a guitar book in June that has it in. I really like this song, even though I don't like Creed all that much and I'm an Atheist. But everyone is allowed their own views, music is my life but there are some songs I really hate and others I love and I think everyone should be able to express it.

As for the meaning, it doesn't bother me so much what it's about. It's just a great song, this one, with great music.

Jimmy Eat World – The World You Love Lyrics 21 years ago
To me, this is about wanting to get out of a relationship but not knowing how, wanting just to be with your friends and to lose the burden of a partner.

"im looking for a nice way to say
"i'm out."
i want out.

i fall asleep with my friends around me
only place i know, i feel safe
im gonna call this home "

Yellowcard – One Year, Six Months Lyrics 21 years ago
I want to learn the intro to this. I met an American girl on a train across Canada this summer and some other totally random people and she was playing this and we were singing and its such a great memory. I think it's about possibly a relationship that's run its course and although the person knows its not going to work, they wish it was still like how it was 1 year 6 months before.

Yellowcard – Only One Lyrics 21 years ago
I think it's about a relationship that's breaking down, how everything's gone wrong, perhaps some unfaithfulness, but despite it all, one person can't love anyone else. Or about loving someone you can never have, but wanting them to know that you will never stop loving them. That was the situation between me and the guy who first introduced me to Yellowcard.
'Here I go, scream my lungs out and try to get to you, you are my only one. I let go, there's just no one like you, you are my only one.'
