| Just watched the Colbert Report performance again a few times, and he's saying "I will move and mend and mold this break" at the end of the first stanza | |

| I also think that he's singing "desert in your face," rather than "desert in deface." | |

| I agree with DespairFactor. SilentAenima, if you're so intolerant as to let someone's beliefs change your opinion of their accomplishments, then that's pretty sad. Like DespairFactor, I'm an atheist myself; and even though I may not be able to relate to this song on a personal level, I can still enjoy it. For instance, Faith No More has a beautiful song called `The Real Thing` that's about heroin addiction. I don't do any drugs, but I still love the song very much... I hope that captures my point. | |

I just wanted to reply to an earlier comment someone made. quote from wecanrise on 08-06-2002 @ 02:15:10 PM: "ok im gonna go straight to the punchline. First i am a firm beliver in my faith and i believe geoff is also..im not sure though" Geoff is an atheist. From Rolling Stone Issue 917 March 6, 2003: "“It's not a political record,” says Geoff Rickly of Thursday's third disc, currently being recorded in their home state of New Jersey. “It's about the friction between people. There's conflict in everything.” The “conflict” extends to the music itself: Shoegazer pop, drum machines, Sonic Youth-style guitar feedback and a possible cello solo (care of Cursive's Gretta Cohn) mix it up with the band's trademark emo-hardcore racket. According to Rickly, the end result is a “violent juxtaposition of sounds.” Among the eleven new tracks are “M. Shepard,” named after slain gay college student Matthew Shepard, which Rickly wrote about a gay friend, and “Asleep in the Chapel,” about the singer coming to terms with his own atheism. Though this is the band's first major-label outing, Rickly admits, “It's not much of a pop record.”" I guess I didn't have to reprint the whole article. But since you guys are Thursday fans, I thought it would be appreciated. |

I had thought that this song was about someone who had had a “religious experience,” but later realized that it was just something natural: "The split second of divinity" . . . "The smoke clears, I see what it is that made me feel this way..." But I believe jimbobjoe's explanation fits much more nicely. Anyway, beautiful song - definitely my favorite from that album. |

| I believe the meaning of this song is pretty obvious. Great tune for a heathen :) | |

I believe zector1981 is partially correct. I think Brodsky is singing: ". . . crash these banks . . ." To tsucol: I know that your comment was directed to another poster, but I do own the album, and quite a few of the songs have inaccurate (and some missing) lyrics in the jacket. Anyway, this song rocks. This is my favorite Cave In album, if not my favorite album altogether. |
