| Patti Smith – Free Money Lyrics
|
|
I'd rather say the lyrics are a critique of a money-crazy culture. At first, whether or not the character has any money and how he/she might have acquired it is ambiguous: there's the "win the lottery"-line but also one about the character knowing the money to be stolen. Does he/she consider lottery-money stolen from all of those who didn't win and dream, as the character dreams, about having endless money and helping loved-ones by buying them everything they could ever (or not) need? Still, the core doesn't lie in the verses but in the rest of the lyrics, who unveil a person in an manically excited dream-state about how the wonder of life where money no longer is an issue. The music contributes to the euforic haze as the character flies from stratosphere to desert to winter and worries are no more. "Every night before I rest my head, see those dollar bills go swirling 'round my bed", "I know our troubles will be gone if we dream, dream for free": but it is indeed only dreaming, another pore soul in a rush, thinking of what life would be with all that money. |

What a contribution to write in a forum whose purpose is to discuss song meanings without giving one's opinion about them. I'm having a hard time figuring this one out, but there is definately sex ("the rubbers you hide...") and maybe prostitution ("down on the disco floor, they make their profits"). |

For young people (like me..) this song doesn't feel very "revolutionary", how often isn't TV bashed these days? But going back to when it was written one realizes that King and co were on to something essential. unfortunately, the tendencies described in the song have only intensified with time. The corpse, the guerilla war struggle, is entertainment more than ever before. |

the solo is amazing! funny how this song is so huge you get so immersed in it the 13 minute-song flies by like your average 3 minute tune... |

One thing about the crazy shit of a mess that goes on in the beginning of the verses is that it's all about the drums. Listen close to the guitarpart and you'll hear it's just the verse riff. |

The guitarsolo is largely a rip from the 20-minute epic "Dark Star" by Grateful Dead. Found on the "Live/Dead" LP. |

This... this.. is one of the most exilirating, rocking hard rock songs ever. I'm having a real hard time grasping the context of the lyrics other than some kind of love-making and joint-smoking blurry haze of a night. That's what I got from "One SMOKE and your head spins around and around", but if it is indeed spoke than it gives the song a "fast and the furious"-crazy racing-feel. You choose. |

Goodness me, it has to most beautiful solo ever. First listen was so amazing when I thought it would end and just went on and on... isn't that the definition of progressive music, that you don't leave the song until it's fully finished? You just cram the last juice out of the fruit that is the song.
Anyways, the solo is just amazing, easily stands up to any solo on any instrument, at least in the "easy" genre of solos. |

Yeah, the musicianship shown on this song was probably unseen at this time, real crazy stuff, this is. Everyone from the bass player to the drummer and brass perform to the max. The ending though.... a bit too much, no? The second breakdown part gets a little tiring just before "I Talk to the wind". |

He can't possibly say betray in the chorus. I KNOW it says so, and that the song's called so, but still. I'll slow it down in my computer some day and listen, but I'm positive that he just grunts or something. |

You push play, then rewind the first track. It goes back to minus 1:30 something. The track is called "The Real.." because it features low sounds that can actually be heard/felt by deaf people. In the end there is a link to the key-ring sounds that normally start of the album, making them a teeny bit longer. |

The song is about Jane, a mutual friend of Eric Avery's and Perry's. You're all on the right track on the interpretation, just thought I'd point out who she was. She's also the same Jane as the Jane in "Jane's Addiction"... =) And she is the person depicted on the right on the cover of Ritual de lo Habitual. In the middle is the subject of the song "Three Days", on the left is Perry himself. |

Why is it that if you ask any given SP fan what song they like the least, it's always this one (Talking about the first three albumsof course)? Ok, I thought the vocals were terribly distorted at first, but soon they sank in, and the main riff is crushing! "You all hoes, and I'm a fag / And I've got mother and I've got no dad" MMMmm..! Anger. |

Ok, I just took it at face value, didn't really ponder on who this Maggie was, just thought that the song portrayed a young man who worked hard for little cash and got no respect or feedback on his work there. Causing him to get a bit angry. But I see of course, on thinking a little further, the possibly allegorical aspects of it. |

Such a comical song it is though. The beat is almost ludacris in it's oriental air, makes you wanna rock from side to side like a guy on weed. |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Thru the Eyes of Ruby Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
I have a theory about the song (and I wish more of you had some, even though it's uplifting to read "omg i just loove the smashing pumpkins" in between serious thoughts on the song :)
Anyways, it's linked to the theoriy presented by Pyrris in the "Porcelina"-forum, but not inspired by it. To me it's two young lovers, teenagers, feeling like aliens in our world (how sterotypically cliché isn't that whole thing..), finding comfort in each other. They get married, although it probably isn't a official one but just the guy getting on his knees with a plastic thing from Wal-Mart. Últimately, one night they take their lives ("the night has come to hold us young", i.e. they won't age since they're dead.., "Where forever frozen, forever beautiful"). And the line "youth is wasted on the young" also points towards that, the kids take their lives, throw their beautiful youth away, desired so strongly by many elderly.
Though I must say that IncuHoleKin's look on it fits very well to the first part, while my fits the latter more accurately.
And don't get offended by the could-be-condescending comments about the young couple, it's just my view on it, I've never had a romantic look on young rebellion. To me it's just cliché, but that's ultimately what Corgan is all about. The only difference is that he makes it feel so true and so right, and that's why I love his work. Epic in every way, this is. |

Don't think anyone has really put their finger on the meaning of this song yet. It's about Josh realizing that all this hatred, all these prejedices that are within him are just destructive and do not do him any good, he realizes that "every dog has his day" and that you can judge a person by the cover/by meeting him/her once. For a long time he "saw only wrong" but now gets that "it's a waste of time". "Stones are easy to throw" means that it's easy to point a finger at someone/dislike someone but harder to try and figure that person out, understand why he/she is acting the way he/she does. That chorus is just saying that everything is coming down, his philosophies collapsing and starting from scratch. |

I truly concur :D.. the song is about people allways "wishing for the day", gloryfiyng their youth which may not at all have been so great. ian obviously can't stand these people... thing is.. it actually feels like one of those songs that does "wish for the day", but that may have been the purpose. |
