I had a good friend i went to school with and sailed yachts with. In 1997 he dropped school to go and crew on a yacht sailing to Hong Kong for a big regatta. The boat was caught in a cyclone and disappeared and despite much searching nothing was found. A few months later when everyone had given up hope for their lives we had a memorial service in our school chapel. The bootleg version of this song was played. It was incredibly moving with eddie wailing out these lyrics, echoing around the hall. R.I.P. Robert Murray 1980-1997 |

| It all seems very literal to me and well explained above but i wonder if the last line "he starts to shake and cough, just like the old man in that book by Nabakov" has any significance. doesnt seem to fit in to the literal meaning of this song. | |

| i have just listened to this song and i was on the ground sobbing uncontrolably by the end and i am barely hanging together as i write this. I suppose i feel like im on the edge tied to the noose. but i havent got anyone around to cut me loose. it just goes to show music really can move you. especially this beautifully written piece. | |

I have a feeling that the church in the last verse is not literally a church but a metaphor for where the kid is abused. I think the first two kids were physically abused but the last one is sexually abused hence he has to come right home after school they had always just gone there , shook and lurched maybe the place is a cult my vague opinion, open to thouights and suggestions |

I beleive it has a political theme like some othe CH songs. this one is about capitalism especially american capitalism and the negative sideeffects of it. we have lost sight of our priorities and values. "Not everyone in New yaork would pay to see ALW" well i would say that most people in NY couldnt afford too and i think that is what it means. A very prophetic song as well "The excess of fat on your american bones will cushion the impact as you sink like a stone" mean that although you are fat (wealthy, comfortable in society. world) from your greediness and ideals now you will come back down to earth and hard.(9,11 although the song was written years b4) Plenty of other clues as well. I think thisa song has shaped the way i view america and it's ideals. It is a very negative song thoug for CH, one of their angriest. |
