Pink Floyd – Echoes Lyrics 22 years ago
I think jimox was closest in his interpretation of the song. I think this song is basically dictating evolution. The first line sets a present setting, as a ground to compare everyhting else too. Waves and tides have been with us throughout mans evolution from the primordial ocean, which has maintained a green, submarine color. Then, no one forced us to leave the ocean, and crawl on the land, we did it on our own. But the reasons are unknown as to why, or where it first took place. There had been creatures previous to us, attempting to leave the ocean, but failed.
When that is done, it begins to point out mans evolution through past events. (this is beginning from "strangers passing on the street...") It acknowledges our common ancestory, sprouting from that first creature whom crawled from the sea. Two creatures think of this concept, surviving on land rather than the ocean. Again, no one MADE us leave the ocean. Going onto the land at that point in time, meant sure death, since we were strictly aquatic. No one speaks of this, yet it still happened. Then , (referring to 1971, i think) we cannot live around the sun for now, referring to space travel, just as we beleived we couldnt live on the land at some point. The sun, while this isnt talked about, is possible to fly around, and gives us a feeling to evolve further.
The light streaming down, could be representing the way sunlight looks from underneath the water looking up at it. The wings, could be connected to a higher being (like God or angels) that is trying to be reached, and could be what drove us from the sea in the first place.
Finally, I am you and what i see is me, means that the actions i take are based on conformity, since we all spawned from the same creature. It could also mean a self realiztion of this, and thus, a higher evolution in ones self. Throwing windows wide, represent how we can now control light (instead of the sun) and that there is room for more evolution.
** an added note. Pertaining to the "ping" radar sounds, they may represent evolution in itself, as it has a sort of ambient, oceanic feel, that continues to get louder and louder and more "space"-oriented.
Whatever it means, one of their best songs.

Pink Floyd – Dogs Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree with a lot of you. In my opinon, this was Pink Floyds best album. The sheer idea of separating human classes into three forms of animals, and then dividing those into sub-classes is ingenious. It truly shows Waters' talent as a songwriter.
The song is about (in my opinion) a person who steadily grows through life, from the point of view of the "starving dog" (Take all you can, while you can).
The first stanza, is introducing the persons life. The second stanza describes how this persons mentality grows and changes in order to amke sure it can go far in life. The third stanza brings to light the difficulty such a mentality will create- basically, as you move up, you must always watch out for other dogs, who are just as eager as you are to move up. The basic message of the stanza is represented in the final line, where you'll end up sad and lonely, and retired.
After that, the stanzas begin to critique such a way of life. The fourth stanza offers advice. The fifth stanza is a first person narrative of someone analyzing their life, and denying the alternative method they could choose. The sixth, offers more criticism, and supports ideas of there being no need for friends, and that only the "winners" will be triumphant in life. Its cynical, and is partially expressed in the idea that everyone acts equally selfish. The final stanza dictates possible offenses who believes in this sort of mentality, but may also be used to support a sort of cynical and manic sort of thinking.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 22 years ago
I just think this is an interesting story to do with the creation of the cd. While Pink Floyd was in the process of creating Wish You Were Here, a large, overweight, man (looking like he hadnt had a lot fo rest, and looking pretty pathetic) walked into the studio. Since this wasn't an unusual thing (for peopel to just walk in and watch bands play), no one did anything. When Pink Floyd finally finished recording for that day, they walked out, and saw the man. At once they recognized him, and excitedly exclaimed," SYD!! What are you doing here?!" (this was referring to the previous lead guitarist of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett) at which point, Syd replied," Im here to play." while he picked up his guitar. All the band could say after hearing such a comment was, "No, Syd, no you're not."
Just thought it was an interesting story to bring up.

Matthew Good Band – Rico Lyrics 22 years ago
I think this song is basically as it sounds. Its just a story about this lowlife-type of dude, Rico, and the sort of situations he constantly puts himself into, and how people are always judging him, while they can't see how much he enjoys what he's doing. At the same time it tells of how he's used to being at such a low point in his life, and that he doesnt wish to go any higher, until everything comes crashing down on him, and he eventually gives up and stops. Whatever it means, its an awesome song. Defintiely one of the better ones they made before they broke up.

Pink Floyd – Us and Them Lyrics 22 years ago
Although I think all of the ideas posted are plausible, when i first heard this song, i didnt get an impression about war, per se. I think a lot of the people who posted the beliefs about the song are on the right track, but i dont think that it's right. If Dark Side of the Moon is about a persons growth, and eventual descent into madness, i think the topic should have something to do with everyday life. I think the war references are used in a way, as they drugs were in "I did it" (by Dave Matthews Band). I think it's about a person becoming fed up with the workplace and the sort of routine fashion, and do as you're told attitude, that accompanies it (kind of like how soldiers automatically do as they're told by generals, being "killed", while they stay out of "harms way"). And that, even though this person hates going through this day in, day out, sort of lifestyle, he was forced into it to support himself, and because this late in life, there werent any other options. And when all of this becomes apparent to him, he can no longer take anymore, and thus slowly "Any Color You Like" and eventually "Brain Damage" begin.
