Pink Floyd – Matilda Mother Lyrics 13 years ago
Take this song at face value. It's just a song about a guy remembering how magical, safe, and secure he felt as a child when his mother read him fairy tales. Syd did not write allegorical lyrics. His lyrical style was simple stream of consciousness and only rarely did he delve into symbolism and never allegory.

Syd wrote about whatever was on his mind at the moment in his lyrics. When Syd wrote while he was on acid you get gobbledegook lyrics like in the song Octopus. There is no deeper meaning to these songs other than the stream of consiousness Syd had at that particular point in time, its meaning probably lost even to Syd as the memory of the trip faded. Other more coherent songs like Matilda Mother and Lucifer Sam are what they are, a rememberance of childhood and a song about his cat.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar folks.

Rush – BU2B Lyrics 13 years ago
I could have made my earlier post a lot simpler. Neil, as based on the lyrics of the last two albums, dwells on and angrily shakes his fist at a God he doesn't even believe exists. The only point to it in my opinion is a subtle way to ridicule believers. Complaining about a god you dont belive in for tewo straight albums is not something Neil would do unless he had a very deep point he was trying to make and it makes sense to me that he is very bitter if organized religion. I'm not a believer so I am not offended, I just find it sad and a little bit pathetic. Neil has a bright mind. He can do a lot better lyrically than this and on a personal level, if you don't believe in God, why would you waste an ounce of care if others do?

Rush – BU2B Lyrics 13 years ago
Agree with you Trisatr. Im an old timer Rush fan. Saw them first back in the late 70s. Lost count but ive seen them 30 times on many many a tour. Indeed Neil is getting more anti-religious......and you cant blame him for talking about this struggle after he lost his wife and daughter in the span of a year. What you see in Neils lyrics is a guy trying to make sense of the unexplainable and he is latching onto whatever truth he can find. Tragedy leads some towards God and some away. Im just getting tired of him dwelling on it in his lyrics.

This new album is the best from Rush in a long time, but lyrically Peart was at his lyrical best when he focused on philosophy. This spiritual focus of his lyrics are just too damn preachy and turn me off. The poetry is pretty good but you can hear it that he is trying to convince the listener to his POV. No longer does Peart just opine and wax poetic on a subject from a philosophical POV, as a brief window into his mind, now he tries to PUSH his POV out and just comes across as forced and contrite. I hate it when people put their spirituality out there and claim it to be superior. Nobody knows jack squat about the metaphysical, so to all artists, dont feed me the line that you have all the answers cause you dont.

Didnt mean that to be such a rant, I appreciate anything Neil has to say over the drivel that is the usual fare these days.

And for the poster who said Peart is not an athiest.....yes he is, and so are Ged and Al.

Cream – Sunshine Of Your Love Lyrics 16 years ago
All you guys are wrong. It aint a love song and it isn't about cocaine. It is a song about acid. Specifically the acid that was going around the time the song was written called "Orange Sunshine". The song is about a guy who dropped orange sunshine and is about to enter the trip and then enters it.

"It's getting near dawn"

A new trip, a new beginning, a new consciousness. He has dropped his acid and waiting for it to kick in.

"I've been waiting so long
To be where I'm going
In the sunshine of your love"

He heard about Orange Sunshine and now he is finally dropping it. Everybody knew about Orange Sunshine in those days. "Sunshine" here is a direct reference to acid.

"I'm with you, my love
The light's shining through on you
Yes, I'm with you, my love
It's the morning and just we two
I'll stay with you, darling, now
I'll stay with you 'til my seas are dried up"

He is peaking now and experiencing the love people feel while tripping. The light is the enlightenment he feels from the psychedelic. Acid trips dilute time. A few hours seem like an eternity, thus he will be with his "love" until the seas dry up.

Pixies – River Euphrates Lyrics 16 years ago
Like all good art, this song has multiple meanings. Darkthundah's interpretation is dead on, for one of the meanings. At face value the song is exactly what it says, being out of gas in the middle east and riding a tire from the car down the river to get where you need to go. Of course the song is also about premature ejaculation. For those wondering what riding a tire down the River Euphrates could possibly have to do with sex, the river is the fertile crescent, "riding" shouldnt have to be explained, and as for the tire.....what are tires made out of hmmmm? And that substance is also slang for a condom. Other possible metaphors - "Gaza strip" = somewhere outside the vagina, perhaps the gooch? Dead sea = his penis. Salty Wine = semen. Dead Sea, via the salty wine, makes the "tire" (condom) float. Ride it!

Michael Jackson – Man In The Mirror Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about a pedophile who sees all the defenseless children in the world and decides that the time in now (1987) to build a fantasy park at his home, lure them to his bedroom, and boink as many as possible before offing himself with Demerol. Instead of just thinking about it, he looks at the potential pedophile in the mirror and decides to make the change to be an actual pedophile, especially since he then had enough money to pay anyone off if he got caught.

U2 – Two Hearts Beat As One Lyrics 23 years ago
Actuallt the lyrics are very straightforward. U2 is singing about the division between Ireland and Northern Ireland and how people who wish it to be united pursue this end in different ways (Black and white - power of the pen) Vs (Red - power of the sword). When in doubt apply the NI situation to just about every song on the WAR album and the lyrics will make sense. Album title making more sense now???
