Modest Mouse – Dramamine Lyrics 21 years ago
Yes, Dramamine is a motion sickness drug. I never knew that it made you trip in large quantities until I read this little forum, so my opinion on what this song means is slightly swayed now. Let's see here:

"Traveling, swallowing Dramamine
Feeling spaced, breathing out Listerine"

First off, in a literal way, he is traveling so he needs Dramamine from getting sick. But at the same time, if you notice he says that he's breathing out Listerine. I often times use this to freshen my breath. So I get the idea that he is traveling to visit a girlfriend of his, so that's why he is using Listerine. It's just a vague clue. However, this is no a relationship he wishes to pursue. He wishes he could get out of it, but he doesn't want to hurt the person. So in a more metaphorical sense, he is taking Dramamine to keep him from getting sick when he sees this person. He is going to see her to keep her happy, not because he really wants to. He's just spacing out in any way he can to make this less painful. Breaking up with someone can be hard, and if you're a passive person like myself, it hurts me just as much as the person I'm breaking up with. So anything to keep them happy and make it less painful for yourself is always welcome. To Isaac, anyways.

"I'd said what I'd said that I'd tell ya
And that you'd killed the better part of me"

This 'I'd said what I'd said that I'd tell ya' business is about him having to lay the news on her that he doesn't wish to be together anymore. He is trying to come up with good reasons, and ones that don't hurt so badly for her. He is saying he had to do this, yet at the same time, he is still looking to be friends. He doesn't want to hurt her. He is having a really hard time saying that she had 'killed the better part of [him]"

"If you could just milk it for everything
I've said what I'd said and you know what I mean
But I still can't focus on anything"

She is trying to get them back together. She's trying to cuddle with him, hold his hand, kill him, have sex with him, whatever it was they used to do. She's trying to milk him for everything. She is making him feel guilty and she's trying to milk this guilt trip for everything. By making him feel guilty, she can coax him into doing all of these things they used to do. It makes her feel better, and it makes him feel sick. But he has to do it to keep her happy, so he does it. This is when it goes back to the Dramamine reference. He takes it so he doesn't get nauseated. So much of this going back and forth, similar to the rocking of a ship, it makes him sick in a sense. So he downs the Dramamine to make him feel better. He becomes numb in a sense. He even tries to convince her that it isn't a good idea that they do all of this stuff again. With the 'i've said what i've said and you know what i mean' line, he is trying to lay his foot down and say no, but she won't take his disobedience. He complies to keep her happy and he can't focus on anything. This means he can't stand by anything he says. He just goes with the flow to keep her happy, neglecting his own personal needs.

"We kiss on the mouth but still cough down our sleeves"

He kisses her to keep her happy, but he hates it. When she kisses him, it makes her feel better, but only for a short time. She knows it's all just a ruse to keep her happy and it makes her sick to know that. They're coughing for different reasons.

"Look at your face like you're killed in a dream"

He looks at her in horror because he wants to get out of this awful relationship.

"I think I know my geometry pretty damn well"

I need to look at this line a little longer, but at the very least it means that he can get by without her. He doesn't need her around anymore for her help, and he is desperately trying to get away.

He is sick by this whole ordeal and is in desperate need of Dramamine to keep him calm.

Toadies – Tyler Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about rape. I have read articles where Todd Lewis admits this. I had a hard time realizing this as well, but upon further investigation, you can get this idea from the following:

"And she runs,
And she waits.
And I wait."

This is a direct reference to his stalking. He is waiting for her, waiting for a vulnerable moment when her guard is down as we see later in the song.

"We can drive to anyplace,
Day and night, to cross this state."

He is referring to when he kidnaps her, they can drive anywhere they please. Or rather, anywhere he pleases.

"I find a window in the kitchen,
And I let myself in."

He is breaking into her house at night.

"I hear her call out to me.
I hear the fear in her voice.
She pulls the covers tighter.
I press against the door."

She is scared. Most people who are awaiting their significant other are not in fear of them coming into their room. She is also pulling the covers tighter, a further sign that she is trying to escape. This gives it its dark connotation.

--------

Of course, all of what I have stated above can be interpretted differently to illustrate someone who is breaking into their girlfriend's house late at night to be with them. So, my feeling is it can be looked upon from multiple points, but one cannot overlook the idea that this is about rape.

The Toadies are amazing. It is unfortunate that everyone seems to have neglected the achievement of Hell Below/ Stars Above, but that's a different story for another time. The Burden Brothers are a great band as well. I have seen them twice and with each concert they only seem to grow better. I am awaiting the sequel to Buried in your Black Heart and I look forward to a long career for them.

Rage Against the Machine – Revolver Lyrics 22 years ago
The chorus: "Hey revolver, don't mothers make good fathers?"
At first I just focused on that without looking at the rest of the song, so I figured it had something to do with war, or something of that sort, where the men are killed by guns (revolvers) and the wife is forced to take over. Basically just saying how war is an injustice and is terribly painful not only for those of us who go, but those back home in the family.
However, upon further investigation, and after reading all of your ideas, I agree with the woman taking revenge/men being possessive and unruly.
