Jason, I was thinking of something similiar. Especially with the speed of the song. The beginning is very slow and at the end it spirals out of control. When you are one year old, it takes your whole life expierence to expierence that year. As the years go on, that fraction gets smaller and smaller. As the comedian Ernie Cline once said, Life gets faster and harder and then you die.
I think you are right about the nursery/chanting. Brock has done similiar creative things in the past (ie. the song "Medication"). |

In society, sometimes sex is viewed negatively --- I think this song is just a reminder that sex is natural because we are "creatures of love". |

"Has anyone noticed that at the end of the song, it kinda sounds like there are sirens going off in the background? IMO it just makes the song more haunting, kinda like signaling the end of the world or something."
I think hes just dying at the end of the song (gasping for air).....while someone steals his carbon. |

There is nothing in this song that supports a political message. The lyrics are a criticism of God's Master Plan. Basically, he is saying thanks alot for creating a world where we have to die and everything is lost. Who gave you your power? You really messed it up. |

"It was always worth it
That’s the part I seem to hide"
Some MM songs sound nihilistic, perhaps Brock is just clarifying that life is beautiful. |

My favorite song on the album
-------
"A life long walk to the same exact spot"
I think this line sums up the whole meaning of the song. It questions the meaning of life. Whats the purpose if we are just going to the back to where ever we came from (turn into carbon and its no longer "you").
"Aw fuck it I guess I lost"
I am going to die, and no matter what I try to do there is nothing I can do about it. |

| Modest Mouse – Dashboard Lyrics

The main theme of the song is in the line ------ "the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio".
Meaning: Through time, our lives got messed up (lost its fundamental structure) --- but atleast we still have our music. We still have whats important in life. |

Don't worry about what people think. Listen to the music you love. Music was made to be appreciated. |

| Modest Mouse – Exit Does Not Exist Lyrics

I agree he has a nervous breakdown/Hyperventilating. The rest is debateable.
==
It could be a religious theme/schizophrenic (hears voices that do not exist, etc). But I don't really think so.
==
I think he having an identity/drug crisis. He doesn't even know who he is anymore. Something -- possible drugs -- has changed him substantially. He feels he will never be able to go back to the way things were. Sunlight 7:20PM (and possible Early September) are contradictions and nothing is making sense. I think he wants to get away from the chaos (take an exit) but he believes he is beyond repair. There is definitely an underlying desire of something he wants in the song, but its ambigious (to understand himself, a love, lifes meaning, etc) but there is a sense of desperation that it will never happen. |

i think hes describing the empty feeling you get sometimes from having unmeaningful sex.
I agree with the previous posters -- "Is this it?" --- Is this all life has to offer?
amazing. |

First off -- this song is amazing. the guitar solo gives me chills.
Second --- some of you completely fucked up the songs meaning. It has nothing to do about pollution. The song is a struggle of trying to discover what kind of person you are and the associated emotions/difficulties with doing so.
but whatever its amazing. |

| Nada Surf – Stalemate Lyrics

yea this song is sweet, probably one of the best on high/low.
im not exactly sure of meaning either but ill take a guess.....
The term "Stalemate" usually gives the sense of a deadlock or uncertainty. He basically feels 'stuck' which is also shown through his references to jail. He feels caged in this sense and realizes it is not a good thing (ie. "not safe in a jail"). I think the song is about how he is not fully living his life. He is a "nervous watcher" and always has to see others enjoying the world while he is caged. Throughout the song he says "when do i jump out of the cake" and its easy to feel a sense of a birthday party. He wants to yell out and scream "surprise" and feel the adrenaline and emotions of the world. However, there is something in him that holds him back and he is struggling to overcome these feeling and has trouble escaping from his cell. |

| Foo Fighters – Monkey Wrench Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
The metaphor of a "monkey wrench" shows that he will no longer be a tool -- no longer be taken advantage of. He is friends with a group of people who don't act like friends and he feels stuck (or "caged") that he can't escape from. "What do you do when all your enemies are friends?" -- shows that he is having difficulty with the entire group of people mistreating him and he is forced with a dilemma. Should he abandon the only friends he has -- or just swallow the abuse and still have people to hang out with. The song powerful stacks each incident and he tries to put each "indicent accident" past him as he "tries to bend" and go with the flow of things. However, the suffering becomes worse than the advantages of having people to hang out with. Before he leaves ("or quits") he wants to proclaim that he didn't want any of this and although he may be left alone from his friends -- he is free from the abuse and no longer caged. He finally realizes that its better to have your pride and be free from abuse than not to have friends (that really aren't your friends anyway).
Short Analysis : This song is awesome. Period. |
