| Aesop Rock – Ruby '81 Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| A genre-shattering fable, this is an amazing song. Has the same silver bullets as Aesop's earlier "No Regrets". I don't know how that man does it. No one besides Aesop could have written this. This song brings me to my emotional knees. | |
| The Decemberists – June Hymn Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I can't help but assume that the lyric "burst to bloom" is a nod to the Bright Eyes album, "Burst and Bloom" | |

here's my take -- I got it from listening to both the album track and the live track from the 89.3 Live Current vol. 2. Should be flawless: It was buried under a flask and uh Caught it peekin' from the bottom of a glass All this nonsense, innocence, common sense, consequence Indulgence in bourbon, this herb, and twin city kids, just disturbed I look around to see the same shit from her She can just sit silent, watchin' life just pass by in a blur Ain't it funny? We can sneak into our lives and then stir Over the perfect things to say And then just choke on the words? Everybody wanna be the next Everybody wanna be in step Everybody wanna fuck Everybody want the consequence of playin' defense Everybody's got shit luck Everybody wanna move to they own beat Everybody wanna make a dent Every girl is lookin' for the next best thing Every boy's in love with his girl's best friend Everybody hates me Everybody wanna fight We can't stand to wake up in the sun But can't sleep in the moonlight I'm right there wit ya I'm shakin' in my own skin I got the closed and the jaded grin I'm at a bar with a coffee shop But I don't like drinkin' And I fuckin' hate coffee shops I'm off the stop the world It's been spinning like a tilt-a-whirl This ain't amusment, I'm a lose it (Got two cents) It was bullshit, uh Got two cents But everybody seems to have the same change but can't break my five up Two cents, (yeah right) but can't spend nothing if I'm holdin' the cup it's like If you come down and just breathe, and just breathe in and out You'll feel a whole lot better, close your eyes, disappear If you can't see them, then they can't see you Right, close your eyes I can never be what I wanna be Nothin' but a man Nothin's even inside of me Nothin I can understand If I try, and so I try To get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand I can never be what I wanna be Nothin' but a man Nothin's even inside of me Nothin I can understand If I try, and so I try To get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand A voice, And it's strained to think It might break Scratch, Crack, Silence, Voice, And It's strained to think It might break Scratch, Crack, Ah! Live in the city, like any other We all live alone The only difference is we don't seem to know it Frozen and lonesome, When it's cold In the summer gotta wait for the loathing Holding, our posture so low And we drink so there's not much worth noting Strolling, so vagrant, so shaken, so grown, so gone, so mistaken So broke, so, so complacent, so worn out, so worn out, so worn out So full of doubt, so full of restraint So full of that self-control, or the lack thereof That we doubt the soul If you come down and just breathe, and just breathe in and out You'll feel a whole lot better, close your eyes, disappear If you can't see them, then they can't see you Right, close your eyes I can never be what I wanna be Nothin' but a man Nothin's even inside of me Nothin I can understand If I try, and so I try To get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand |

| Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics | 18 years ago |

wow, a lord of the rings reference? I never would have put that one together. is aesop the dragonforce of hip hop? |
|
| Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I take that back. I just heard it again on the radio. It's definitely "cane" or something similar. peace | |
| Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics | 18 years ago |

The chorus sounds like it should be "with a key to the sky like 'none shall pass'". Which would make more sense IMO. This song is a stone cold groove. ace rocks. |

| The Cardigans – Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| the fantastic thing about this song is that the singer is singing towards her father (not mother, hamessyrath--the clues come when she sings "man" in the second verse and "boy" in the final chorus), but she holds the 2nd person perspective throughout the song. This sort of fools the listener into thinking that she might be singing to someone else's father, but "blood is like water, the bath that you poured me" proves that it is her own father. Effectively, the 2nd person perspective implies emotional distance--she is singing to her father as though he is just another man. | |
| Relient K – I So Hate Consequences Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I imagine this song being sung about a car accident, though parts of it make no sense in that respect. I just prefer to believe that not every song has to be about a relationship or what have you. | |
| Saves the Day – Third Engine Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I love how bad people are at transcribing lyrics, yet they post them anyway. For instance, the line is not "On there is there offing everything was melon and orange", it's: "Out there in the open, everything was melanin orange" Melanin, i.e. the pigment in your skin. |

| Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
True. It is a metaphor, but I doubt it's a metaphor for anything as simple and mundane as some romance story. All of the songs off of Deja Entendu have meanings on multiple levels. In this case, there is obviously the story of a man that died on a ship. He seems to be singing to the one he loved. Further meanings are a bit too vague to pinpoint without insight from the band themselves. Frankly, I'm just sick of half of the comments in this community saying "ZOMG ist LUV SONG!". If people don't have any real insight, please, please just keep quiet. People simply don't seem willing to think that musicians aren't writing about romance--it's very annoying. |

| Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Those of you who say that this is a love song must be semi-retarded. It's a story of a shipwreck that occurred off of Montauk Point, NY. Brand New is from New York, if I recall. Jesse probably visited the Montauk Point lighthouse, read the story of one of the many shipwrecks that happened there, and wrote this song from the point of view of one of the men that died on the ship. If you wish to correllate the song to relationships, that is your prerogative, but don't bastardize it to fit your whims. ie, The "funeral" that keeps them apart is the singer's funeral. Saying that this song is about a relationship is like saying that Galveston Bay by Bruce Springsteen is about relationships and not war-- both songs have a relationship aspect to them, but relationships are hardly the focus of the songs. |

| Beck – Qué Onda Guero Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This song is about Beck's childhood, growing up as a white boy in a hispanic city. The voices talking in the background are making fun of Beck. "Que onda" and "Adonde vayas" both translate to "where are you going", and guero is a derogatory term meaning "white boy". | |
| Audioslave – Like a Stone Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| What a delightfully ironic statement, zim77. Back when Audioslave wasn't popular? Audioslave is essentially a superband, with cult followings from two bands backing them from the very beginning (Soundgarden and ). The ironic part is that Chris Cornell broke up Soundgarden because they were "becoming too popular". | |
| Jimmy Eat World – Polaris Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Just to clarify, "Gare du Nord" is not a Paris hotel, at least not in this context. Nor is it a reference to the North Star (gare du nord means "North Park") Gare du Nord is a train station in France, approximately the third busiest station in the world. No doubt this is what he is referring to. Whoever posted those other answers should really have researched their ideas better, because other people take it as truth when it is really just guesswork. | |
| Marc Cohn – Silver Thunderbird Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Wow, no posts at all? This song makes me wish that I liked my father. | |
| Straylight Run – Another Word For Desperate Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I saw them play this song live before the album came out; it was awesome, I assure you. | |
| Jimmy Eat World – Kill Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| oh, and this is the best song on the album, easily. I love the way there is an easily identifiable chorus, bridge, and verse, even though the lyrics never repeat. | |
| Jimmy Eat World – Kill Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
the lyrics are actually: Could it be that everything goes round by chance, or only one way that it was always meant to be? and not: Could it be that everything goes round by chance? I only want what I was always meant to be This is from the CD jacket insert, in case anyone cares. |

| Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| All the arguing about the homoeroticism of this song is pointless. I hate to be the one to break it to everyone but FF is a complete hack of a band. Guaranteed flash in the pan. Not to be negative, but try reading their website and then taking them seriously. The guys who founded the band can barely play their instruments (self-admitted), and when asked why they started the band, they reply, "To make music that girls can dance to." So if you take music seriously, please don't listen to this tripe. | |
| Thrice – Motion Isn't Meaning Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| This song is also on Hopelessly Devoted to You Vol.5, and is titled "Motion Without Meaning". So if it is indeed an error, then they've made the same one several times :) | |
| Mêlée – New Day Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| To me, this song is all about resilience. Getting up when life knocks you down. It's about the great feeling you get when you recover from hardship without help. It's about remembering that you can conquer difficult times with a little perseverence. Anyway, Melee rocks, and it's a shame that they have to be stuck on Hopeless Records, who really do appear hopeless sometimes. This is one of my favorite Melee songs, very good for getting out a of a sullen mood! | |
| Amber Pacific – Always You Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I first heard this song on Hopelessly Devoted to You vol. 5, and quickly realized how much AP rocks. So I tried to find what CD it came from, only to find that they've only released an EP at the time =(. Unfortunately, these guys are signed with Hopeless Records, who have had a somewhat spotty history. So, lets just hope that AP prevails! If you like this song, 'Leaving What You Wanted' is also great... and oh yeah, the line "and I can't sleep without you" reminds me of the way I kept a picture of my gf under my pillow a long, long time ago, so she was always with me. | |
