His vision is clouded; good judgment can’t be made. Drunk again–a recurring nightmare Thoughts weigh down his normal every day function. Notice, “I could never love again so much as I love you” Love is still in present tense, so he still has feelings. “where you end” could be a reference to death, the end of life, but most likely not. “where I begin” refers to where he should start to recover–to get over this lost love. The “take my eyes, take my heart” is a plea to a greater being (God) to relieve his anguish. Also perhaps an allusion to Oedipus Rex when in the end, Oedipus gouges his own eyes out. A long shot, but possible. Now, the kicker–if his love is still alive, why wouldn’t his eyes be able to see her? So this must be a clue that it is a love lost in death “If never again they’ll fall upon, the one I so adore.” “One more drink” translates to one last time to be with his love. He is thinking that its his fault she has died, so that’s why “I don’t need to think she broke my heart.” Because he is trying to realize that it isn’t his fault, and she didn’t mean to break his heart. My “grace is gone” his love, his second half has gone, just one last visit (another drink) and he’ll begin to move along. Each time he thinks of her (a drink to remember) he has to take a drink (literally and metaphorically) to get over her. “How could I dream…love like you again” is describing his difficulty in realizing that his love is gone, and he wishes it were as easy as dreaming to find new love. Once again, repetition like “heavy on my mind”, “one drink…another to forget…” shows how tied up he is with this issue. That is the only thing he sleeps, eats, drinks and lives. “you think of things impossible” is the second time he references a second person. The first time he pleads to God to “take my eyes…” and this time he knows that she “thought of things impossible.” Its not that she doesn’t love him anymore, but thought is used to convey the term “done.” You have done something impossible. You have passed away. “The sun refuse to shine” means that it is a dark day---mourning takes over. “I woke” and realized that you’re no longer there, but you’re beside me, spiritually. Finally in the end, the “I’ll move on” is replaced by “my grace is gone.” He has finally awakened from this half mourning self pity-half sleep and realized that his love (physically) is truly gone, but emotionally his love is still with him. this is my favorite DMB song. -- tornpage |
