No kiddin about the pretty badass cover. I had this song on repeat for quite some time. Then i ran out and learned how to play it on the guitar......and im a drummer. Lyrics are pretty straight forward. NUFAN made a pretty brilliant decision covering this for the live album. |

I think this would have to be one of LTJ's worst songs. Its not ALL that bad...but if you listen to the other stuff its just a waste of track space. I guess i am saying this based on the re-release on the Goodbye Blue and White cd. I wish i could program my CD player to skip over it every time. Excellent band, though. My fav and always will be. |

The thought of how everyone has the song with the deepest meaning to them... One day i sat in front of my computer in class and talked with one of my good friends. He always shared an ear piece to his MP3 player, and today was no different. He talked about this band, LTJ, and this kick ass song he just got. He talked about how the CD it was on hadnt been released yet. As he pushed play, and the opening lyrics came to life...i became glued to it. I made him play the beginning over and over and over. That night i went out and bought pezcore and losing streak. This was my gateway song, to my gateway band, which lead me into this field of Rock and Roll that i am in today. My first show was Less Than Jake with Bad Religion.*just got the chills thinking about what he has to type next* LTJ opened up with Automatic, but not far after was the one i had been waiting for.*man..just got em again* It got quieter and it was just Chris singing with both of his hands up on the mic. I need not be embarrased to describe the mist my eyes got. I was in the VERY front of the stage, just looking up at him and singing my heart out. That was the turning point in my life, the eye opener so-to-speak. This is the one song that gives me these emotions anytime i listen to it. I'm not sure if there are other people with the same thing happening, but this is definitely the sole reason i am living the life i am living now. The thought just occured to me... What if i had ditched class that day? (sure as hell happened more often than i went) I might not have the character i have grown, nor broken free of the ignorance i was once blinded by. All because of 3 god damn minutes with one god damn song. Im done now... |

Dont feel bad admitting it makes you cry...i am exactly the same. The emotion put forth behind this song is greater than usual with these bunch of tweakers we love so much. There is only one song with more meaning to me behind it....and that would have to be "Look What Happened" Check out the posts on that for the reasoning. |

I would have to agree that the song was written before his passing. Although i think it would give more meaning to Cherry, i guess i could see it going to Greg Graffin. I am not aware of a connection between the two that would lead to this, though. If you read the letter about Jim's passing, you would have seen him talk about him helping with the song writing when he was in high school. Ditching class and scribbling in his notebook. I think that would justify "You're the reason that i play at all." Just a mix of both opinions. He might have meant it for Greg, but it makes great sense for Jim |

I get the chills as i scream the song along with him. The way his voice can transfer from the blood tells all to like a movie star is amazing. I didnt hear it any of the times i saw them live, but he probably just wouldnt want his voice to go out after screaming his heart out on every leg of the tour. |

I went to see them with snapcase at the Ogden in denver a few months back. I must say that i hadnt been into them until that show. Anyone who can steal a show from snapcase and get the crowds attention.....well.....that would make them amazing. This song i especially remember live. All of the people going nuts and screaming RISE over and over. Others surfing on top of the crowd waving their hands and chanting as well while facing the stage. *just got the chills* It is an excellent way to just look around and remember exactly why we listen to this music the way we do. I talked with nathan after the show. One of the most down to earth people you can meet. I heard him expressing some views to a crowd of people before i got him one on one. Of course this instantly made me want to run out and get as much of their music as possible. And to think it all started with this song... |

I think its time i give my two cents. Selling out can be defined as letting the money change your music. Not showing up on MTV. I happen to not watch mtv, but im not going to sit here and bash on it. You people are missing the grand scheme of things here. This is not a battle to see who is more punk....much like a battle of testosterone at your nearby high school. None of us have the right to call ourselves punk. Period. What we share is the common understanding that we all believe in so deeply. I cant say this enough. Davey and the crew believe in UNITY. Now, the radio thing. Do a little homework(for instance watch the video "The Show-Volume One)......and you might catch yourself an interview with Davey and Jade. During the interview, they are asked for a comment on the airplay of there newest releases. Davey goes on to say about how he thinks ITS GREAT. And he's right. I'll quote him..."I just want people to hear our music....and what better way for them to hear it then on the radio?" He goes on to explain how not every fuckin kid out there has the access to shows and music stores like us close to the city. I cant see why it can be such a bad thing that they spread their words and ideas to a much bigger crowd. Yes...it does bring into contrast us having to deal with the people at the shows that like to fight and are just there so they can brag about how "PUNK" they are. But what if instead of bitching about it like so many do, we actually open their eyes? I do my best, my very fucking best, to explain to these kids why they are there. The unity, the fun, sharing the songs with the creative artists that took the time to give them to you. Its all about that. I know i go on about unity a lot, but to me...its the basis upon which rock and roll was formed. (i like that one...rock and roll..) I believe in it enough, and hope for it enough, that i got the symbol of it tattooed on my forearm. AFI cannot keep getting this nonsense about selling out all of the time. Davey writes his inner-most feeling down on paper...FOR ALL TO SEE. ALL. Period. We are so very fortunate that he is brave enough to do this. I for one, can say i am not so blessed. No one ever sees what i write, because i do it for me. Davey is just generous enough to share his theories and dreams with the rest of us. Them making money is just the effect it had when society realized these were unique thoughts and sought out more of them. |
