Well, the red light probably means more today than just prostitution. But that was a common thing to do years ago (and i guess still today) and I think its even more common in Britain. But prostiitutes would put a red light in their window so "johns" would know where to find them without the hookers actually walking the streets. When this song first came out I knew what the song meant but I didnt understand the meaning of the red light either. |

I think its just about sex period!!! He reflects on a time when he was younger and wilder and making it with girls. And there is this HOT girl. But I cant figure out if the girl is a new chick ("you aint as green as you are young") or a familiar girl he used to be with ("hey baby it's you") like he knows how she is. "sink your teeth right through my bones..." i think is oral sex. but i dont think its about a relationship really cuz he says at the end "i aint talking no big deals...I aint made no plans myself" meaning 'we're just having fun!!! |

I see it as the guy being MARRIED but he unexpectedly falls in love with someone else. But still loving his wife and wanting to keep that commitment he knows he has to "lie" to the other girl, telling her he doesn't love her...so she can get on with her life. I think the "maybe another time, another day" means if they had met at a different time and place in thieir lives, they could be together. But he has someone waiting for him at home who trusts him to be the man he promised her he would be. Its basically the same theory as the above posts but I always pictured a marriage involved, that's why he doesnt wind up being with the new girl. Because he cant just ditch his marriage. (although some guys wouldn't care if they were married or not) But I think he knows there's no good reason to leave his wife other than bad timing. |
