I was at a 3EB concert in 1997 and Stephan said he wrote this song about this girl he used to date. He then said that he was happy to report that she was there with him tonight and things were working out. I guess they didn't because within six months he was dating Charlize Theron! |

This song has always reminded me of my Uncle who suffers from mental illness. He spends most of his days along trying to get through to the next one. Some might look at him as a 'Nothingman' but I try to appreciate his difficulties and use them as motivation for using my intelligence and strength of thought. Many people simply don't appreciate what a gift it is to be able to think clearly w/o voices interrupting you all of the time. Anyway, remind me of my Uncle Allen. |

Maybe I'm just a loon but for me this song has been about friendship. True friendship. Friends that are willing to stand by your side no matter how 'clumsy' you are or how long it takes to leave 'that old shoelace' (a metaphor for whatever is holding you back or causing you pain). I went through a very bad time in 1997 when this song came out and it reminds me so much of my friends that stuck by me and didn't 'laugh' at me or be 'fake'. |
