i wrote about this a long time ago, but since my view has changed. Suddenly it occured to me that it might be about Hitler. Like about how he promised these things to the people including that he would die for them. Also it says "not all martyrs see divinity" which could mean Hitler never really realized his own vision, having to kill himself instead. Also when he says "pointing his finger" about how Hitler pointed to everything around him without ever mentioning his own heart as the source of all the problems.
Finally, obviously when we think martyrs we think Jesus so yes it could have been about Jesus or any martyr. But Hitler comes to mind when I think of "ranting and pointing his finger" and all the other lyrics. "Standing above the crowd...strong and loud..." etc. |

These guys are so awesome live I can't believe it! I saw them with Band of Horses and they totally stole the show (in my opinion). Please go see them live!! You won't regret it!
Anyway, I just wrote a paper about The Old Man and the Sea and argued a point about how the sharks keep circling around the boat and this symbolizes a cyclic pattern which the Old Man cannot stop that ends in some sort of self destruction. In the case of the book, the Old Man loses his prize catch to the sharks and no one gets to see his victory!
I think the song is about despair and a self-destructive personality that comes out of that despair. Any artist can relate to this song. It's about that weird moment when you realize that everyone around you is totally indifferent to what you think is important. So what can you do? You just go crazy...the whole thing is very sort of self-destructive no? Like the boat is sinking more and more as the song goes on...
One line that sticks out for me: "Turn the water red like you want it to be" Like all he wants for himself is just to get torn apart by the sharks. And yet the sharks, "Don't feel loss" So even the sharks are indifferent to the killing of him! Interesting... |

Haha Oh...I love this song. It just sums up Ozzy's personality so well. The doctor says, "Smoking and tripping is all that you do" and all Ozzy says is Yeeeaah! I'm not saying I condone his drug use, I believe in moderation...and psychedelics are NOT for everyone. I think Ozzy is really brilliant; a lot of his other lyrics are much more powerful (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and War Pigs for example) and important. So many artists have their addictions...but no reason to get heavy handed. Great song with an massively heavy riff via the grand master of massively heavy riffs...Tony Iommi you are a god...but we all knew this already... As for the meaning, it could be about a band or something...how should I know...but I don't think it's a goddam coincidence that he talks about drugs at the end. |

why does everyone always assume that all songs about children are about some type of abuse? This song being about molestation is a bit of a stretch.
I think this song is about loss of innocence and growing up. It's written as if Billy is talking to another person. "Disarm you with a smile" means he is smiling at someone and making him/her remember innocence and childhood. Making him/her forget about violence and other things associated with adulthood. When Billy says "cut" I believe he means "reveal." Although I could be wrong.
It's about looking back and wondering if you made the right decisions. It's about remembering how badly you used to want to grow older ("I used to be a little boy, so old in my shoes") and now that you're old, you don't know what to do. In other words, he still thinks of himself as a boy even though he has grown up ("what's a boy supposed to do?") and he doesn't know what to do with his life.
The powerful line "Oh, the years burn" could mean many things. I think he means it hurts to know how many years have passed already. Or, the years burn by very quickly. Either way, these four words definitely sound regretful. Sort of an "Oh, all that could have been" type of thing.
"The killer in me is the killer in you" could be directed at his parents and could mean, "I may be a bad person, but i'm only as bad as you made me" or "The bad things in me come from you"
I think the quote that DSFIRE wrote was pretty interesting. Try to find it if you can...there are a lot of entries.

i think that it is clear that maynard believes in reincarnation. this song seems to be a celebration of life itself. he's saying to embrace this wonderful chance to be alive.
also, he is saying how his body is a reminder that he is mortal and he will die eventually, but he will be reborn agian and change forever like a parabola (which is a matematical equation for a line that curves and goes on forever.)
he also says that though we go through hardships, we are all eternal spirits that will go on forever, and that the pain that we feel in our mortal life is just an illusion. that mortality ITSELF is only an illusion, because we will all go on forever. |

Hey i just wanna say something to disposition. I don't blame you for thinking that incubus is just another band trying to get rich off their image. It may seem that way, as it has often with me in the past with other bands. And i don't blame you for not giving this band a chance. but c'mon this is a great band. And this is coming from a seious music fan and i HATE the image and money driven direction that alot of music is going in. I think this band is actually genious. If you don't think so you need to listen to some of their other stuff. Have you even heard the CD s.c.i.e.n.c.e. by incubus? and don't just say "NO I HAVEN'T BECAUSE THEY SUCK" give them a chance. S.c.i.e.n.c.e. is much harder than their other cds. And Fugus Amongus is alot like Mr. Bungle and Primus. Give them a chance they kick ASSSSSSS
