| Sufjan Stevens – Vito's Ordination Song Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
i agree with previous interpretations that Sufjan laces religious allusions into a song whose meaning doesn't have to be any more "Christian" than "Islamic" or "atheist". to me, the song's meaning seems far away from supplying ammunition to a misguided cultural war between "religious" and "secular" people. personally, i write as a self-proclaimed "existentialist". to that extent, here's what i think about Vito's Ordination Song. the haunting horns convey the tragedy of the human condition. many of us were led to believe in a perfect God who has only good intentions for humans and some yet believe that we "really do" have a so-called "God-shaped hole" in our hearts. while Sufjan Stevens is a Christian, he is sensitive to the many problems (or evils, if you will) that beset our lives. this song expresses a common wish that many of us have--namely, that we could ensure the safety of our loved ones in a world filled with dangers. moreover, the song also appeals to a deep sense of compassion. "when you write a poem/ i know the words, i know the sounds/ before you write it down/ and when you wear your clothes/ i wear them too/ i wear your shoes...and the jacket too" suggests the ability to know a person so intimately that you effectively become that person. you know the words that she's going to use or you walk a mile in his shoes. as i listen to Vito's Ordination Song, the horns indicate that such wishes, hopes, and dreams are impossible. that is not to say that these aspirations are worthless or meaningless. but the horns cry out that we humans cannot ever fully protect those we love from harm. neither can we actually become another person. at the end of the day, we can only approximate the experiences and feelings of our most cherished companions. undoubtedly, it's possible that Sufjan wrote this song as if God were speaking to human beings. that is a beautiful interpretation, but i say, let us not overlook the real pain and suffering that yet needlessly occurs on this Earth. that is why i focus on the song's horns--which communicate the sorrow of human experience. the song itself indicates "when the bride groom comes/ there will be noise/ there will be glad/ and a perfect bed". and even for most Christians, that bride groom still has not come. |

| Fiona Apple – Get Gone Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
the haunting piano melody sticks with me. yes Fiona is angry in this song, and for good reason, i think. before i comment further, i will make this known. i am man with feminist sympathies and concerns about power relationships. it is well known that men, in many relationships (romantic, economic, political, religious, etc) to this day, often have the advantage of power. not so in Fiona's song. she calls inconsiderate men out on the carpet for their behavior: "it’s time the truth was out that he don’t give a shit about me" and it is high time for women, in all parts of the world, to indignantly declare their own painful experiences with men. this itself can be a liberating experience. it's certainly a matter of interpretation, but i think that Fiona balances indignation with a genuine feeling of tragic loss. the song's tempo and lyrics alternate between slow piano and driving jazz--her voice follows suit, moving from somber and reflective to stern and assertive. in this sense, "Get Gone" is a sincere expression of feminism. the song is a collection of raw emotions. Fiona is obviously capable of suffering but too strong to wallow in a subordinate position. all things considered, i prefer this interpretation over one that plays into patriarchy-inspired sentiments, e.g. "gee that woman is pissed! (hint hint--maybe she's on the rag!)" it would be unfortunate if listeners didn't catch Fiona's nuances. she's not just angry. "Get Gone" demonstrates her sensibilities. |

| Ludacris – What's Your Fantasy Lyrics | 22 years ago |
|
heathyr, i'm a student at Princeton Divinity School. i transferred from zimbabwe, to escape the hell and destruction of which you bastards probably will never hear about on CNN. i endured female genital mutilation as well. i have no clitoris. but anyway, you may have heard of this institution. it's part of the IV league. i'm sure that you were on the waiting list after sending in your application. but nevertheless, i need to stress that your counterargument offered to KonArtist on 09-02-2002 @ 12:01:48 AM contained an erring premise in its structure. the phrase "closeminded jesus christ" not only ignores the deity of Christ, forgetting to capitalize His Holy Name, but it also ignores the wealth of tradition and scripture that the Holy Mother Church presents as evidence that Christ, that hella-good man that He was, actually whole-heartedly accepted all of the countless fuck tards found in this world. Jews, Muslims, Gentiles, Gothics, and Niggaz alike. So choke on that, Slap Nutz. |

| Dashboard Confessional – Screaming Infidelities Lyrics | 22 years ago |
| This song reminds me of this time I fucked my girlfriend's mother when she was out of town on some choir trip. I had that mom all over the house, even in my girlfriend's bed. I was screaming to my heart's content. Yeah, we broke up. But whenever I hear this song, I think back to the greatest sex I ever had. It's too bad talent is not genetic. | |
| Third Eye Blind – Never Let You Go Lyrics | 22 years ago |
|
it's likely about an incredible relationship that isn't there anymore. steve (jenkins, the lead singer) begins with "there's every good reason for letting you go" and 'ere too long informs "i never let you go". obviously he realizes that he needs to move on because it's over and there's nothing to do but seek another harbor. however, the song continues with this conflicted state of mind, because he argues "even if i changed, what's wrong with it?" the lyric is reminiscent of a "take me back" kind of argument. later on, he expresses that he doesn't understand why he can't be together with this super-fly chica. "if there's a reason, it's lost on me" but still allows himself an out, in the interest of adapting himself to the fact that they may never resume the previous relationship. "maybe we'll be friends, i guess we'll see". the last verse is an amazing form of nostalgia. i love the "i remember the stupid things, the mood rings, the bracelets, and the beads" lines because that's what past relationships eventually become. a letter here, a bracelet there, things that remind us of times that are gone--"you don't dream for me, no". we can still feel that magic every so often, after it's over, if we've found it hard to get over that person. hence "i still feel your pulse like a sonar". the line that takes the cake for me is "that girl is like a sunburn i would like to save". incredibly poetic.... we can get burned, but we don't want the burn to fade away, because we want to keep that girl (or that guy) in that magical way that she/he once meant to us. once the sunburn's gone, you've learned and don't feel the pain anymore. so kudos to windchild, because the song really is about change and the road blocks we face along the way to accept it. |

| 311 – Running Lyrics | 22 years ago |
|
it's an awesome song to chill out to. the lyric "don't be afraid of becoming the sea, don't worry yourself...understand everything must go" sums up the song fairly well, at least it captures the tone/aura perfectly. 311 usually crafts quite a song complete with outer-worldy effects and lazy, drifting guitars as well as hard, driving guitars, bass, and drums. kudos to the fellas for this number. |

| Seals & Crofts – Summer Breeze Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
when you're sitting in your cold dorm room during the middle of december, this is the kind of song that makes you pine for the days of summer again. awesome music and the lyrics go right along with it. but i'm serious, seals and crofts remind me of the endless peaceful possibilities of summer. freedom from the half-awake days of school, time to just chill out and live it up. what could be better? :) |

| Billy Joel – She's Always A Woman Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
no way cherry moon, even if you're only laughing at your own not clever joke, the woman's not bi-polar. billy crafts a song here that describes that unattainable girl, the one that you can't help but simply be amazed by no matter what she does, even if through it all you heart gets intentionally or unintentionally manipulated by her. musicgirl's hit the bullseye, because what makes a person valuable to any of us is not necessarily because they're always there, they always love us. that's boring and too taken for granted to mean anything. instead, here, she can ruin your faith, and only throw shadows at you, but you're so intoxicated with the mystery of it all that logic gets thrown out the window. now that's love, huh?!?! |

| Smash Mouth – Then The Morning Comes Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
the trademarked smashmouth sound combined with some poignant lyrics make this song for me. seemingly, the song tells the tale of a nice guy who's trying to pass off his string of failures, especially with the girl ("looking back before she goes") in his life. everybody, to a certain extent, tries to take their knocks and shake them off. unless you're one of those people that drowns in self-pity and milks every semi-tragedy for all its worth, then you're gonna end doing your best to stay calm and collected about things. but underneath you're the tragedian, the actor in a tragic situation. best part of the song, musically and lyrically-"when it comes it moves so slow...tomorrow's gonna hurt". for all of us who have been there, you know that tomorrow isn't gonna be pleasant. and voila, then the morning comes and you have to deal with it. |

| Primitive Radio Gods – Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
this song is the essence of what music is. hell, it's what truth and beauty are too. forget what ricky fitts said in american beauty. yeah the paper bag dancing on that just-perfect day is really cool, but so is chris o'connors offering to the gods with the amazing aura of his standing outside a broken phone booth.... the music is first class but the lyrics take it to the preeminent level of recording feats. despite o'connors apparent religious distaste, the lines "we sit outside and argue all night long/about a God we've never seen/but never fails to side with me" touches on a profound level that many never grasp. not only so-called religious fanatics, but also stubborn agnostics and atheists. it's a poignant commentary on religious disagreements as well as pride. who of us really considers in the heat of the discussion that there's a possibility that we just might be wrong? maybe God isn't always allied with our views. the following two verses are filled with thoughtfulness. "am i alive or thoughts that drift away?" and "can money pay for all the days i lived awake but half asleep?" it always leaves me speechless... the key theme of the song, in my humble opinion is "you ride the waves and don't ask where they go". all of us think that we call the shots in our lives, but it's astounding how much is beyond our reach. often we meet some of the most intriguing people of our lives simply by "chance". it's nothing of our own accord, it just happens while we ride the waves. and we don't ask where they go, because we don't want to see the tragedies waiting for us down the line. ultimately the last harbor we reach is death. "the seconds ticking killed us all a million years before the fall". pretty much where do all of these thoughts leave us? standing outside a broken phone booth, money in hand, but there's way to explain it all and it doesn't matter, because the phone's out of order anyway. chris o'connor created a classic with this one and that's final. |

| Paul Simon – Kodachrome Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| catherineks is right on the money. it's a light song that brings to mind a warm summer sunset. but paul also gives it substance. the "crap in high school" part is genius (as most of us can likely attest). the second verse takes the cake, in my humble opinion. the reflection on all the girls he's ever known and the idea of bringing them all together...sweet nostalgia. it's also ingenius to incorporate photography terms in the midst of it. "everything looks worse in black and white" classic song, paul simon. | |
| The Nixons – First Trip Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| the opening chords to this song are super fly. the nixons make use of some fresh lyrics throughout to top it all off. it's pretty obvious that a relationship keeps popping up on the radar screen of the singer. "here i am again" and "wouldn't you think that this time". it goes through long periods of nothing and then suddenly becomes something again. prolly the relationship was the girl's first "i was the one who took you on your first trip to the moon", or at least the first relationship that meant anything. to sum it up, it's a song worthy to sing in any shower near you. | |
