i really like this song. midtown lyrics are so positive and inspirational in their simple pop-punk way...for me, "what you have's not what you are" means that even if you are in a bad situation in life, and don't have a lot of friends or whatever, it doesn't mean you're a bad person, because maybe you deserve better but you're just unlucky at the moment. |

when i first heard the weakerthans, i didn't think i'd like them because i usually like stuff that's less mellow...but the first time i sat down and really listened to this song and read the words along, it made me cry. it kind of scared me that a song could do that. all these pictures flashed through my head like a movie, and the words just meant so much....these guys are amazing |

thursday has said in many places that this song is based on the movie "paris is burning," which is about drag queens.
in response to all this stuff about the world being too tolerant or not...i don't like the word "tolerance." it implies that something must simply be "tolerated." what the world lacks is acceptance, and you can't deny that. tolerance is a form of apathy. people let a lot of bad shit happen because they don't care, and nothing has the opportunity to improve. we all sing the songs of separation as we watch our lives bleed out through our hands...we may "tolerate" each other, but that just separates us more because we don't truly accept other people. even if violent discriminatory incidents were prevented, we couldn't force a lot of people in this world to accept each other. and that's really sad. |

it's interesting how people manage to turn the meaning of every thursday song into the ending of a relationship. seriously people, there are other things in the world. i didn't see that angle at all...i just saw this as a song about the loss of identity, as he says in the lyrics. to me, it's a powerful representation of someone's thought process when they lose their sense of self. i was really struck by the idea of everyone seeming the same but any of us being able to be the "enemy" (killer), maybe without even knowing that we are... |

haha i had a feeling people would get defensive. aww. well i think these guys sound like brand new. don't waste your time telling me you disagree because i know you do. i know they scream more. but there is a really set formula that people are picking up, with the multiple singers, the multiple melody lines, and catchy choruses that dont' say anything more than pop punk songs ever have. i actually like this band. and brand new. i'm just not one to jump to call them amazing. there's what i like, and then there's what i think is really good. |
