Harvey Danger – War Buddies Lyrics 13 years ago
Can anyone give some insight into how the final verse fits into the song? I get the idea of the tanks rolling into Warsaw and the imagery it provokes, but the significance of singing into a tape recorder eludes me. Cheers :)

Barenaked Ladies – Wrap Your Arms Around Me Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think this song is necessarily about domestic violence .. I've never known BNL to just put the meanings of their songs on the surface, which is why "I put my hands around your neck" likely doesn't refer to a specific act of violence.

Rather, I think it's an expression of 'metaphorical choking' of a relationship, and her response. He is nothing but destructive, but she reciprocates with nothing but love.

The song is an admission that the protagonist has destroyed the relationship, and he's hoping it's not to lateto right the ship.

I think there's a moral here about sticking to your convictions, despite what the people around you want you to do, and regardless of the consequences of doing so.

The character in the song had a 'crisis of conscience' when confronted with the bank full of nuns, and decided he couldn't go through with the robbery attempt, despite the fact that everyone else that was in on the job was depending on him.

Even though it was too late to abort the robbery attempt, he chose not to go through with it, believeing it to be the right thing to do, and paid the price by going to jail for it, while his friend walked free.

Anyone else get a strong Beach Boys vibe from this song?

The song is a metaphor for any situation where you think you've planned for every possible problem, and then something comes out of left field that there's no way you could have planned for (the metaphorical 'bank full of nuns'), and you lose your composure and panic.

"It's not what you're sure of, it's what you don't know"
.... pretty much sums up the entire song.

This song, to me, signals a change in the themes within BNL's music. Most BNL songs seem to centre around a character who appears to have surrendered control of his life to the forces of determinism (the ironic message embedded in the lyrics being that we DO have control over what happens in our lives, and that change IS possible). This is the only BNL song I can think of where the central character actually sticks up for himself and exercises control over his life (although not until the end; he allows himself to be manipulated in the earlier parts of the song).
