hi. i also saw dan wilson in concert last night at paradise, and here's what each line means, according to him: open all the doors and let you out into the world (out of the womb and into the real world) turn the lights on over every boy and every girl. (the womb is dark. the world is light out) one last call for alcohol, so finish your whiskey or beer. (you can't drink when you're pregnant, and once you've got a kid, you have to be around so get your last in while you still can) you don't have to go home but you can't stay here (gotta get outta the womb!) I know who I want to take me home (he said "the baby sings the chorus") time for you to go back to the places you will be from (the places you'll say you're from when you're older. the examples he gave were "boston" or "minnesota") this room won't be open 'til your brothers or you sisters come. (he said "room rhymes with womb") So gather up your jackets, and move it to the exits - I hope you have found a friend. (this is literally about copulation - think on it) every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. (end of pregnancy is the start of a baby's life) |

okay, sorry, I just need to comment. no, to all of you who seem to think Say It Ain't So is a rip off of Where Is My Mind. no, it just isn't. and no to all of you who claim they sound nothing alike. Where Is My Mind employ chord progressions using E, C#m, G#, and A. Say It Ain't So (although tuned down a half step) uses C#m, G#, A, and E. so yes, they are similar, and they do sound alike. but not ripped off. come on, it's a common progression. |

| Pleasure from a lack of pain...times are good because the relationship is strong and it hasn't broken up yet. He doesn't want time the time in the relationship to end, because everything is calm at the moment. | |

| Oh, and also, the thing about Rivers' parents not drinking is true. They are vegetarian hippies, actually, Rivers' brother is named Leaves, Rivers changed his name in high school to a pseudonym because he was embarassed of his parent's hippie-dom, and he became obsessed with Kiss and playing Dungeons and Dragons (as we learn in "In The Garage") | |

This song is amazing. I've listened to it time after time after time after time. It's just the most incredible song in the world. I play it on guitar every day, in fact, I'm playing it in a concert next week and I've recorded a cover of it myself a few times. It's an amazing song. It is about alcohol, yes, but the melody is so haunting and sadly romantic that I tend to tune out the lyrics and listen mostly to the amazing chords. It is beautifully written. Of course, the video is one of the worst music videos ever made, what with the one room the entire time, the hackey sack, and the juice box. But the song, especially the first time the bar chord is played, just gives me chills. "This way is a water slide away from me that takes you further every day, so be cool." I used to think it said something about a revelry day, hmm. I'm fairly obsessed with this song, I think. It's affected me like no piece of music ever has. Cuomo, however bizarre he may be, is a talented writer and brings great music to each CD. This is the most stand-out piece on the Blue Album, rivaled only by Only In Dreams, and possibly The World Has Turned And Left Me Here musically. What frustrates me is that it's tuned to D, so I have to tune my guitar each time I want to play it...hrrmph. Anyways, great song. :-) I'll rant more later, when I have time. |

Okay, I do agree that he and the girl did something together, something they regret...maybe they had sex and she got pregnant, or something like that...it's definitely a tragic song. The ghost slips away... |
