Sara, just because it contains the words "hole" and "hard" does not mean it's meant to be taken in a sexual way. To interpret this song as something sexual makes the rest of the lyrics make no sense. He's obviously talking about the dreary life he leads, and when he says "you better get me something to fill the hole", he's saying he needs something meaningful in his life that he can enjoy/care about, not that he needs a dick up his ass. |

That said, this song is great to dance to, as maria pointed out. So is most of Rio, one of the greatest albums to come out of the '80s. As for the meaning of the song, I think it seems to be describing those who are corrupt, greedy, etc. Since it is called "Notorious", it may be referring to the lies, greed, tricks and bad-mouthing that comes with fame. |

The message of this song is simply put, which makes all the more powerful, in my opinion. Tool, I don't know why you think that is what the song is about. The song is talking about adolescents who grow up in medium-to-high-income families that act like delinquents. I know people who are like this, and they're irritating as hell. I always think of this song when I'm around them. |

She is this man's support and love, even though he is still with another woman. Until he ends it with her, she is forced to keep her love for him a secret. She is patient with him, and she believes that he loves her even though he's never said it to her (probably out of guilt). You can tell from the lyrics that she isn't very happy with her situation, but she sticks to it and compromises because she is in love with this man. It certainly is a sad love song if ever there were one. |

Ferthuko and liverdude are both right. This song is a melancholy look back at the narrator's past. The usage of summer as a metaphor for the carefree days of youth is perfect. This is a great song to listen to in the summer, since the guitar really gives off the feeling of summer (appropriately), but you can listen to it anytime and still feel the meaning of the song strongly. I've always loved this song and, while the Ataris did a nice take on it, you can't beat the original. |

I think Tracy Chapman's original version is better than Xiu Xiu's cover, but their cover is still very good. You can't beat the writer of the song, though. This is truly an amazing song. I and many others can relate with the subject matter. It's a very sad song. The line that gets me the most is, "I had a feelin' that I could be someone". |

This is a great song. The bitterness in the lyrics and the drums and bass flow together perfectly. I love The Postal Service, mnichols. "Such Great Heights" is a stellar song.

It reminds me of Mazzy Star the way that this song is sung all dreamlike. I absolutely love it.
As far as the meaning, it's obvious that it's about a relationship where the speaker of the song fell in love with this person. The lines "When you told me my surprise I looked and asked you, 'Why did you tell me now'?" could mean that he told her that he wanted to end the relationship. So the last lines of the song are talking about the relationship in retrospect and saying that she will always look back on it positively and always care for him. |

It's referring to the lines preceding it, "the world is my expense, the cost of my desire". It's saying that "Jesus blessed me to lead the world into it's future, and I'll protect the world with fire (that could be capitalism, greed, etc.)."
I think it may be referring to how our government has many very religious people running it, and they believe that many of the diplomatic/corporate decisions that are made coincide with their religious beliefs. They believe they are always doing the right thing, sort of. |
