this is a great song, and feist is making some really cool music, but holy crap this is literally the worst music video i've ever seen! i close my eyes when it comes on because i want to hear it, but not see it. it's too cheesy to be sexy and too serious to be funny. watch and you will understand |

horrible...absolutely horrible. It must suck to be a band without even the tiniest spark of originality. |

| Arcade Fire – Une Annee Sans Lumiere Lyrics

"la nuit, mes yeux t’éclairent" means "at night, my eyes light your way"
and the8es has the right definition for "oeillères", they're called blinders in North America, but are sometimes called blinkers in British English
i have a very different interpretation of this song than anyone else has offered, though.
i think its a cheeky, coy sort of allusion to a young couple "sneaking" around behind their parents' backs. the streetlights all burnt out, like they couldn't see anybody or anything else besides each other, but they weren't letting anybody else in on their secret, especially her father, an opressive force. But it seems kind of cheeky, like "don't tell your father that he's clueless (blinders), he should see the clues (shadow)" To me, this song is a beautiful, coy ode to young, and passionate love |

| Bright Eyes – Take It Easy (Love Nothing) Lyrics

my interpretation of "she'll probably feel cheap, but I'll just feel free" is that after being ditched by the girl in the first part of the song, he now does the same to other girls. Sleeps with and/or forms brief relationships with them then cuts it off before he can get hurt. Judging by the "cheap" reference, my guess is he just means that he sleeps with them and then leaves them |

this entire album is a beautiful sonic portrait, and I love this song, although I am disturbed how much it reflects my position on "love" right now
"and i'll try and be kind, when i ask you to leave.
we'll both take it easy"
it's kinda unhealthy, really...
I agree with diesel83 on the whole teenyboppers/new fans point, as I am a relatively new Bright Eyes fan, but i'm hardly a "teenybopper". whether or not someone begins to listen to a musical act when they begin to become "popular" really has no bearing on their appreciation of the music. if we follow that logic, then it would be justifiable for your grandfather to spit on you and call you a "bandwagoneer" if you decide to pop in a Frank Sinatra album, and depending on your grandfather, that could be downright terrifying |

| Loretta Lynn – Stand By Your Man Lyrics

wow i can't believe there aren't any comments, or even an artist listing for tammy wynette, who originally wrote/sang this song. i don't even really like country, and i love this song. it's so beautifully paradoxical, it caused an uproar with feminists in 68 when it was released, but looking at it now, it seems to be an affirmation of women's power in relationships and life.
"after all, he's just a man"
it also contains the often-forgotten message of endurance in love by way of actually working through issues, not just forgetting your love as soon as times get tough. stand by your man, indeed. |

| The Hives – A Little More for Little You Lyrics

i love this song, probably my favourite on the album, and i think it's warning us against listening to and believing all the bullshit and lies we get fed by authority figures as we try to find our way in the world. the subject of the song didn't think for himself, and now he has nothing. he "spent his time just like they said you should" and now he's aged and unhappy. it's saying you gotta do what makes you happy, not what other people think you should do. that's my humble opinion, at least. the hives kick ass, and if they ever tour anywhere near your vicinity, go see them, even if it means a road trip, cuz they do not disappoint, and their music has real substance, which is severely lacking in our culture right now. peace. |

i think this song is just a basic story-telling song and the underlying message is to appreciate simple things, like water, and the beauty and benefits it can bring to your life. i really don't get the jelly roll part tho... |

i agree with jabbatron, awesome drums but unfortunately dave grohl did not play them, this is their pre-nevermind, pre-grohl era and chad channing still played drums on this track, check out bleach and incesticide if you haven't already, some of their hardest rocking shit is on those albums |

i think its about the impact that hate-filled people like members of the KKK have on other peoples lives. it is a very good song, but on the tribute cd marilyn manson covered it, and his version butchered this song so badly that i could've cried, almost all the covers on that cd suck harshly |

awesome song, i always kinda thought it was about hitler, the line "i thought you died alone a long long time ago" maybe was in reference to his suicide, and at one point bowie was accused of being a nazi, that was of course because he decided to walk around london in a nazi uniform, swastika and all, he denied it and thats where i see the line "he said i was his friend which came as a surprise" but who knows, i don't know a whole lot about bowie, and i think that most songs are rarely about just one topic. oh and by the way terraryzin, in utero took 12 days to complete, and upon completion, they celebrated by setting their pants on fire |

i never realized this song is about courtney, very cool. to me, it totally fits in with all the girls i go to high school with. you know the type, the popular, snotty girls who act so sterotypical that they're almost making a self parody. it fits perfectly with them |

| Nirvana – Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle Lyrics
| 23 years ago
|
|
Frances Farmer was an actress in the '30s and '40s but she was also an extremely "rebellious" girl and since that didn't fit what society thought women should be like, she was sent to an insane asylum. She was not insane, or even mentally ill. She was raped, starved, tortured in unimaginable ways, and eventually lobotomized. Her story is magnificently sad, a perfect portrait of the inhumanity of humans, and she paid the most horrendous price, simply for not fitting in. Hm, I wonder why Kurt felt an affinity towards her... |
