| Say Anything – The Last Great Punk Rock Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I'm not sure how old any of the above posters are, but in the world I live in, you don't grow out of activism and grow into a world of girl problems. There is a lot of generalizations in this thread, and it especially irks me to hear someone say that "foolish and overly-simple ideals ...mark a lot of punk music". Clearly you have strayed from punk music and into some sort of wanna-be realm like..I don't even know what bands those are, I've never heard them. Say Anything are not punk; post punk maybe, but not punk. That doesnt mean that a lot of Max's influences weren't punkand I think this song is his way of recognizing that his message is relatively shallow when put in the context of his influences. This song may be about growing up, and getting over a phase, but I don't think it's meant to disparage that phase, e.g. : his reference to "acting dumb", I think that is just him being self depricating and moving away from trying to be a die-hard punk. I don't think he's calling die-hard punks dumb. | |

| I did not post that comment above, I'm not sure what happened, but I think songmeanings glitched, because I remember reading that and then posting a reply. weird. | |
| Rise Against – Behind Closed Doors Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
yeah, I think it also addresses the fact that a lot of people talk about how they want "change", but then when they see people protesting violently or doing driect action or civil disobidience, a lot of people tend to turn up their noses: "The lives we've crossed in search of change, but all they see is treason" The "lines" are laws, which are often pretty arbitrary, and people watching from home might see breaking the lawas as "treason", but the people breaking them are only "seeking change" |

| Operation Ivy – Officer Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
It's about cops, very straight forward. The 'comparison' is that of the cops behavior to the behavior of animals. "Officer, you act like an animal; you're out of control" Brutal tactics refer to pepper-spray, teargas, "non-lethal" weapons like bean-bag rounds, pepper balls, and rubber bullets. If you just google search "police brutality" , "Miami protest" , "G8 protest" , or look up Carlo Giuliani on wikipedia if you want to see the end result. http://stream.paranode.com/imc/portland/images/2004/08/294586.jpg Thats a link to a portland indymedia picture of police "keeping the peace" on the streets. |

| Dropkick Murphys – The Rocky Road to Dublin Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| it's pretty obvious that it says paddy both times (cabin found for paddy/that's the paddy's cure) and it is a derisive word for the irish, but I know a lot of irish and irish-americans who use it in jest, much like any other ethnic group uses derisve words in closed circles as loving terms. for example, every time i go to the bar, the bar-tender and I take a shot "for paddy," although I must say I'm a bit bewildered by the substitution of D's for T's, although I'm sure it has something to do with the original gaelic spelling | |
| The New Amsterdams – Strangled by the Thought Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think, as with most of his material, that the meaning of this song is pretty clear. It seems like he's written a song for every mood, every feeling, every thought... like no matter what I'm going through, or how happy or sad or angry I am, there is a song by Matt Pryor that I cna relate to. That's pretty impressive | |
| Say Anything – Ants in My Pants Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| "I was a faker" (not fake), meaning he'd never felt love before her, he'd thought it was love, but this time it was real. The way he says it though, it doesnt seem too sincere, it seems like its just a line he's feeding. the whole song seems very post-facto, like shes gone and he knows it, its just an afterthought | |
| Erik Peterson – Olde Tyme Mem'ry Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
his last name is PeterSEN, i think. this is a great song, clearly about how silly faux-rustic home decor is, and how its analogous to the silly people who are comfortable in their faux-rustic homes. About how fake wood finishes are like watered down whiskey and hollow doors and corporatized folk-art are like 'brass passed off as gold' The real irony is the Google ads on the side of the screen>>> "Rustic Beds" "Rustic Bedding" "Rusitc Furniture" "Chinese Charms" its exactly what Erik is talking about. This really hits home for me because I do carpentry and have to install all kinds of silly faux-rustic shit. I also get to do some really nice REAL woodwork that almost makes up for it, but everytime I put vinyl siding on a house I cringe. |

| Dead Prez – Be Healthy Lyrics | 20 years ago |

| Dead Prez – Police State Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Not as wrong as you might think, and biased yes, but not unfairly so. They talk about race a lot, but I interpret it as being a lot less racist than a lot of rap or hip/hop (sorry?) that has nothing worth saying. | |
| Operation Ivy – Knowledge Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
that's bull$HlT dude, I mean Green Day has their short comings for sure, but seriously man, If anyone has incorporated punk philisophy into the mainstream without completely selling their soul and ideals to the 'man', its green day. They don't write what they think people want to hear, they write what they feel and it happens to be the sentiment of a LOT of people in this country and throughout the world. You should listen closely to the lyrics of Operation Ivy songs and be sure you actually agree with them before you go raving about how good they are. I mean its fine if you don't agree, but the message of Op Ivy and other punk rock greats is one of Unity, Humbleness, DIY, and generally good treatment of other people and the environment. I thought for a long time about those things and decided that they were in harmony with the way I currently live and intend to live my life, so I went out and got a Unity tattoo, as an homage to OpIvy, but more importantly their message. Those beliefs arent for everyone, I know that. And they certainly are not the sentiments of George W Bush. If you really support him, enough to brag about it while simultaniously bashing punk rock ideals (yes, green day holds true to punk ideals, thats a whole nother conversation), I think you REALLY need to think long and hard if this music is really expressing your beliefs. Now if I had to pick between the moral examples set forth by Op Ivy or President Bush, I would certainly chose Op Ivy, and I have, but a lot of people choose the other direction and thats fine, until they lose touch with themselves and fall to the level of belittling others for personal gain. Alls I'm saying is think about it. |

| P.O.D. – Abortion Is Murder Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Violin Chick- if you will recall, we weren't "given" free will, we took it. And I'm glad we did, cause now we have it and are free to make our own desicions about our families, as well as our song lyrics, and even free to decide what kind of garbage we want to bicker about on internet message boards. | |
| Alkaline Trio – All On Black Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Someone may have said this already, i read that a few people didn't understand it so I'm gonna explain, theres thisn old riddle, that goes: What's black and white, and RED all over?? the answer is the newspaper, its black and white and READ all over. Its a dumb joke for little kids, so he uses the riddle, and throws a twist on it. The part about the satanic book may be true also, but I thought I'd let everyone know about the riddle. |

| The Get Up Kids – Holy Roman Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
If you study the romans, we are surprisingly similair in many aspects of our customs and civilization, I'm not going to give a history lesson, but I was startled to learn how we are repeating history (not just our government, but everything we do as a people, its all been done and a lot was done by the romans) "take stock in a (the) master plan" is what I heard, and it makes more sense, "get stuck" has a more accusatory tone than the rest of the song. I think the land mine analogy is a great one, a reference to vietnam/ww2 i think laslty, although the political overtones are obvious, I think matt is still making refernce to friendships/relationships gone wrong, as many of the lines could mean both: Friend stabbing friend Come clean like you said you would Make peace like i know you could maybe thats just me |

| Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
"THE CALM ROUGES; they travel fast and alone" "The say that the CAPTAIN STAYS FAST with the ship", meaning he doesn't abandon it. Crack the Sky is a band from the Baltimore area, they are old enough and the right type of music to be an influence on BN, but I have no idea what that has to do with this song. |

| Thrice – The Artist in the Ambulance Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Dammit people, the falshing lights and sound are the ambulance, its the siren and lights of the ambulance. Metaphor, he is using a tragic near death tail as a metaphor for dying inside, or feeling dead becasue you've let down the ones who love you. I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with the music industry or with him questioning the validity of being a singer of a band "i'm sick of always talking when there's no change i'm sick of empty words, let's lead and not follow" -It's about the world being a crappy place because people are fuck-ups, and he's making the desicion to own up to his shortcomings, in the hopes that others will follow. I know its all open to interpretation, but I'm almost positive that the potential of dying is a metaphorical one, I don't think hes sad because no one would miss him if he died On a side note, I'm an EMT and I think its awesome that this song gives credit to people in that line of work because it is often a thankless job |

| Thursday – War All The Time Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I don't agree with most of this "9/11 allusion" stuff, but its hard to look past the "ashes of american flags" and the oil feild reference. A lot of my friends are protesters and activists especially now, and I would be shocked if Thursday as well as at least half of this country didn't have some ill sentiments towards the administration and towards the 'war'. No blood for oil is something I see written on a daily basis, so I feel like the oil feild refernce must be about the current war, although I really dont believe that there is much 9/11 connection going on | |
| Darkest Hour – Veritas, Aequitas Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
yes, truely amazing, and as much as I believe that DH have some of the best vocals out there, I think the lack of in this song makes it even more powerful. It just goes to show how well feelings can be conveyed without words. The real name of this song is Aquetis Vertunis, someone on kazaa renamed it veritas aquetis, which is from the movie boondock saints, the two brothers (the saints) each have one of the words tattooed on their hand/trigger finger, as they spread truth and justice by killing the evil people of the world....if you havent seen it, you should.\ Anyway my point was someone didn't bother to look it up before posting it and that is annoying. |

| BoySetsFire – Vehicle Lyrics | 22 years ago |
|
"Heaven helps those who forget to dream" Its about people loosing sight of their own existence because of an obsession with god and the afterlife. I took "I am no one, I am nothing" to be almost making fun of people who depend so heavily on their religious beliefs to define them as a person. As far as coalesce, you're right there isnt much punk but to say that there's "nothing punk about coalesce" is only true if you define "punk" as good charlotte and simple plan, in which case you're right. Coalesce is hardcore, albiet they arent as melodic as most hardcore these days, BUT they lack the structure and rediculously meticulous timing and precision of a metal band. On top of which, Sean Ingram's vocals are straight up hardcore, not metal, not metalcore, if you have to label them, they are hardcore. Speaking of labels, who "categorized hardcore as a punk sub genre"? Who has the right to do such a bold thing? The people down at Amazon.Com??? By saying that, you are writing off many of the important underlying principles of both genre's and you are limiting both. |

| Coheed and Cambria – Everything Evil Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| bad news SickOfIt, the first post had nothing negative about emo, it jsut said that coheed is not emo, theres nothing negative about that. And I would be inclined to agree, because although they sound a tiny bit emo, they lack the key element: lyrics. don't get me wrong, claudio writes some awesome stuff, but its about aliens and the f.b.i., not about heartbeak, so yes, we shall call it melodic rock | |
| The Get Up Kids – Burned Bridges (Coalesce cover) Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| shite - i beg to differ, I would say that james himself is the best drummer in the whole world...or at least in al the stuff I listen to, all in al I would say he is my hero, and not in a stupid I want to be/date him little girl way, but in a "wow, thats the life I always dreamed of and knew I could never have" way | |
| None Too Soon – Can't Go Further Lyrics | 23 years ago |

| Matt Skiba – Good Fucking Bye Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| Im pretty sure matt skiba hasnt given up alcohol, honestly, Im not sure if matt skiba is capable of giving up alcohol, I think they are kind of one in the same. It woudl make a lto of sense if that was the theme, but I don't think it is, I think matt just makes a lot of parrallels between drinking/drugs and women, its really clever acctually | |
| The Get Up Kids – Action and Action Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| james dewees is a musical god, his work with the get up kids is a fraction of his talent, although I must admit, its damn good, I really like the dynamic he added to the band, all in all hes had a hand in the works of 4 of my favorite bands and the songs he does are amazing..whats there left to wait for? | |
