I think this song is the singer confessing to sleeping with women while on the road. He's imagining what they're lives are like now and apologizing for using them. Lines like: "These several years out on the sea Made me empty, cold, and clear" and "I'm not the ladykilling sort Enough to hurt A girl in port" sounds like he's not normally someone who has quick flings and one-night stands, but that the loneliness of the road is enough to push him to these types of relationships. Great song. My favorite off the new album. :-) |

Great song off the new album. As usual for the NPs, the lyrics can be pretty ambiguous. He mentions "numbers" throughout the whole song, which could be referring to the sort of meaningless statistics we're bombarded with from various sources. I think he's saying that people use numbers to "prove" things and convince people even though they don't really mean anything ("always the numbers but never the name"). Regardless, great, catchy song. Ranks up there with their best :-) |

I don't really care if stupid people (eg MK&A) like the music I like, but it's lame if they claim to like it just because they think it makes them seem "cool". I agree, people should just like the music, not the image, but they should actually like the music. Now that indie rock is "cool", we have people who wanna seem hip so they pretend to like the music when really they don't care at all. If they really like the music, that's great, the more the merrier. But if not, they should just shut up. |
