Let's do this like an AP Literature class. "September never stays this cold where I come from" -In this line, the speaker begins to explain his situation to his girl, explaining that for the past month or so he's been jarred by her cold apathy. "And you know, I'm not one for complaining" -Basically, he's not one for complaining. He usually lets any conflicts between them slide away. "But I love the way you'd roll excuses off the tip of your tongue as I slowly fall apart." -The irony in this line is that he loves something that hurts him. To be cliche, one could say, "You leave the ones that love you most, you love the ones that hurt you most." In this line, be sure to note the beautiful change in voice from bitter sarcasm to bitter defeat. "Except this won't mean a thing come tomorrow" -The speaker first states that their ordeal--breakup, I believe--won't affect him. He doesn't care for something that took so long for them to build. But instantly we find that he actually does care: "and that's exactly how I'll make it seem." We find that the speaker is now in denial. He still thinks he doesn't care, though he really does. Note that Denial is one of the four defense mechanisms. "'Cause I'm still not sleeping, thinking I've crawled home from worse than this." -Another defense mechanism, Rationalization. To make the pain go away, the speaker devises a self-satisfying but possibly incorrect excuse to help him feel as though his problem is not as bad as it seems. "So please, please, I'm running out of sympathy" -By definition, sympathy is a relationship or an affinity between people in which whatever affects one correspondingly affects the other. The speaker, in turn, is still letting time for reconciliation, as he still feels he holds a bond with this girl. "And I never said I'd take this, I never said I'd take this lying down." -In this line, the speaker forewarns that he will not allow her to step all over him again, and that he WILL, in a more euphemistic sense, fight back. "She says, 'c'mon c'mon, let's just get this over with" -The speaker quotes in bitterness her indifference towards their relationship. She wants to end it so fast while he wants to try to keep it alive. "You've always come close but you never come easy" -From this quote we can infer that these two have come close to breakup before, and only by offering the world would the girl remain in the relationship. "And I still know everything." -The speaker reminds his girl that they've been through so much, he's the one that knows her best. No other could possibly know her better than he does. Listen to the song--in his last repitition of "And I still know," note the echo demonstrated in the speaker's voice, an attempt to leave a last impression before the girl is gone. "If it's not keeping you up nights, then what's the point?" -Here we return to the thematic "you hurt the ones you love most" idea. If the breakup isn't affecting the girl just as bad as it is affecting the speaker, he feels it is futile to continue trying to fix what can't be fixed. "I'm in your room, now is this turning you on Am I turning you on?" -The speaker is now at the final stage of their breakup. Desperately he's asking if he's turning her on, if he's good enough for her yet. The speaker is also asking her if she is enjoying what she's doing to him--asking where or not it is giving her the thrill that while they were still in a relationship the speaker could not give her. "I'm practically naked, are you turned on?" -By naked, the speaker means that he has taken everything off--he has expressed his feelings about the breakup and about her. He is worn, torn, and beaten. Once again, he asks if this makes her happy. whew, that took a while. anyway, i only did this cos I'm bored and ehm i plan to major in English. good practice 'nstuff. anyway i know a lot of you may think this breakdown of the song is too scientific, i'd probably agree with you. i like to take this song for what it is...an expression of raw emotion, about bitter end, longing, denial, all those things. that's what makes this song so great, it relates to everything that happens in a turmoiled relationship. anyway... -nakakatakot (smarterray@hotmail.com) |
