| I've heard that Elliott Smith said this album is about going out with a girl who was addicted to heroin and therefore becoming an addict himself | |

Does anyone else think this song is about his mother? "He waved hello, silent like a mime". "He" could be Elliott's step-father, in which case, "There's no changing my mind" would mean that he can't be convinced to like his step-father. "The time it took a cigarette to burn" reminds me of the opening in "Waltz # 2" (which is about Elliott's mother): "First the mic, then a half cigarette". The next line, "She said, "You got a lot of things to learn" sounds like a something a mother would say. Echoes that only seem to bring about A silent expression Things you may allow This reminds me of the lines in "Waltz # 2": "She shows no emotion at all/Stares into space like a dead china doll". Than theres the line "I felt like a kid of six or seventeen..." and "He walked over to her like before". I think "He" is Elliott's step dad, and the woman is his mom. There are three people in this song: a man, a woman, and the narrator. And a lot of Elliott Smith songs are about his abusive step father. Any thoughts? |
