One of my favorite hip hop songs. For awhile I hated the genre, because I was looking at mainstream acts like DMX, Jay Z etc. that have absolutely NOTHING of value to say in their lyrics and can barely put together a couplet. Aesop Rock is everything they aren't. He is quite literally a genius, so I'm not asking that the genre as a whole try to emulate him (an impossibility) - instead, I simply with people would use rap, a very powerful medium, in a more intelligent, thoughtful way. |

"If I had a dollar for every plot that you made in this bed of nails we make"... I love that; it sums up the absurdity of the Cold War brilliantly. Two sides plotting their tactics and contingency plans for a war that is simply going to wipe them both out almost instantaneously. Damn this band is smart. I like Sparta a lot (Mars Volta is too trippy for me), but it's not quite the same. |

There does seem to be historical significance, but I also think there is a theme of redemption here. Although this seems overly simplistic for the average ATDI song, it makes sense... it doesn't matter what fears, people, or ideas "imprisoned" you beforehand, because now it's "in the past". |
