Brand New – I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light Lyrics 21 years ago
i think the lyrics are slightly wrong - instead of "i've never felt so hollow" it should be "hallow," i.e. holy or revered. i love those lines, about feeling like a deserted broken-down church. so pretty.

The Postal Service – Nothing Better Lyrics 21 years ago
i really like how when the song starts out, the background noise is relatively smooth and calm, but when the girl's counterpoint bit begins, in the background violins kick in which sound almost sireny, like sounding a warning - she's come back around and is shaking up his neat little bubble, and he's all flipped about.

Straylight Run – Mistakes We Knew We Were Making Lyrics 21 years ago
just an interesting note about the title... i noticed that this song has the same title as the appendix to dave eggers' book "a heartbreaking work of staggering genius," and thought it was a coincidence until my friend annie recently told me she'd read somewhere that AHWOSG is john nolan's favorite book. hmmm.

also: rockstarash - that's so cool, about this being put into "seventy x 7." if you perchance have a file of that saved and wouldn't mind sending it to me in email or AIM, i'd love you forever.

Guster – Parachute Lyrics 21 years ago
i agree with what many people have said - this is about taking a first step into the unknown, making a big transition, but with the confidence that you've got a figurative "parachute" to catch you. you're not totally alone, and there is something to fall back on and protect you if things start going badly, and to cushion the fall. for some people this may mean God, for others friends or family, and so on. i don't think it's just that we have different interpretations of the meaning of the "parachute" in *this* song alone - it's in life in general. when things get tough, some people turn to God, others turn to friends/family, etc etc. and however you interpret this song reflects your personal views, so it can mean different things to different people. if you can feel connected to this song in any way, like you know that comfort of having a "parachute" in your life (regardless of who/what it is for you), then more power to you. :o)

Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics 21 years ago
yeah, so as far as jesse saying/singing something at the end of the song... this may be sort of far fetched, but here goes. on the beatles' "sgt pepper's lonely hearts club band" record, at the end the band spliced in some nonsense chatter after the last song has finished, which some think is one of them singing something like "never to see any other way." it sounds quite a bit like what jesse's singing after "play crack the sky" has finished. the fact that it's similar words, faint and hard to make out exactly, and at the end of the record... i dunno, could be a little beatles reference on jesse's part?

Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics 21 years ago
beautiful, beautiful song. any thoughts on the meaning of the title? i can't for the life of me tell. "crack the sky" is a band i believe, but any meaning beyond that escapes me.

i post this because it read that there were 199 comments, and the OCD part of me was getting all jumpy.

this is an absolutely beautiful song, lyrically, and i will admit that i haven't even HEARD it. i can't wait 'til i do, though.

Dave Matthews Band – Bartender Lyrics 23 years ago
going along with the theme of bartender = god...

i personally think that this is the most obvious way to interpret this song, as it fits with all the lyrics, especially the part about being on bended knees.

also, this idea is by no means new - an indian philosopher once had an elaborate bartender/god comparison, and was subsequently killed for saying so. dave probably was aware of this, as it is a moderately well-known (esp. among the more alcohol-inclined...) piece, and built upon that with this song.

just my two cents!

Dave Matthews Band – Two Step Lyrics 23 years ago
hey y'all, just thought i'd toss my two cents in here as well. the following is an interesting discussion based upon the "hey, helena," line, and it's shamelessly gacked from the song catalog at www.antsmarching.org.

A journey with a loved one sprinkled with Old Testament with New Testament references along the way. Originally, the stanza was, “Hey Helena” (and is sung like that on Crash although the printed lyrics say otherwise) instead of “Hey, My Love”. Speculation held that this “Helena” was a Greek reference. It’s probably more accurate that the reference is to Constantine’s (as in the Roman ruler who legalized Christianity) Mother, St. Helena, finder of numerous Christian artifacts (including the True Cross) and built Christian Churches in the Holy Land. That places more of a Christian lean on the song during earlier times, and one of the “loves” could be the religion itself, especially in earlier versions of the song that were not so touchy-feeley graphic.

Dave Matthews Band – So Much to Say Lyrics 23 years ago
one thing i love about the song is the complete contradiction it makes - while stating that there is "so much to say," dave is, for the most part, repeating the same lines over and over. i adore the paradox that creates.

Dave Matthews Band – Crush Lyrics 23 years ago
"could tomorrow be so wonderous / as you there sleeping" - fantastic line. this whole song is just perfect, with the mood it creates lyrically and melodically. it's so calm and serene, and then the chorus swells in this amazing way... i love this song to no end, definitely my favorite DMB song.
