I was lucky enough to see these guys live some time ago, and it seemed like everything stopped as Gary sang "Hold me in your freezing arms before I have to go." Brilliant.
As for this song, it seems like the resignation of an inevitable departure. The band has said a lot of thei album came out of ill-fated relationship songs and reaction to the war in the Middle East, so it's a toss-up whether it's merely a departure or a full-fledged break-up. |

I love that this is a song full of conditions because, really, isn't that how love can be? "If this is right and this happens and everything fall together perfectly, THEN things will be great with us."
Also "*If* you would be my punk rock princess"? Sounds like she isn't at all--in spite of their differences (though SoCo punk rock? hmmm...not quite) and his distinct lack of bravery, he still wants to be with her. That's gotta be the sweetest thing. |

Such a pretty song, with Charlotte's voice alone with the piano. She sings about a man she knews and loves and is not with; they've decided for one reason or another not to be together, but now she has rediscovered feelings for him. The shell he's built against her ('his armor,' if you will) and her own indecision whether she should or even wants to work to regain her place in his heart-- the honesty in the metaphorical lyrics is perhaps more heartbreaking than the situation itself. |

my favorite Jimmy Buffet song, even though I've never been to New Orleans. Its meaning is far from hidden and yet so simplistic that one feels they have to dig to find something about it.
What interesting images-- being truly born in a barroom brawl and yearning to get back to 'the island' (I assume Key West?) to live how he wants to live and not subscribing to what the busy city life demands of him. |

I feel so out of place... I'm not as big a fan as a lot of the commentors here, but this one *does* have sentimental value for me. It's one of those that your SO/friend/family member plays for you because he loves the sound, and you both suddenly realize as you listen to it that precise time--that it's lyrically perfect to your situation with that person. --And hence, around the writing debate and the real musical merit of the song, its real value of reaching out to people is there. I mean, seriously, isn't that what it's about? Musical in general and this song itself. |

Besides every woman-child is looking for this guy, the one who sees every aspect of you and still gives you that roll of his eyes and slight smile whenever you do something almost unexplainable. I was at Creation East 2002, and I saw the Newsboys perform this song; I can honestly say this song brought on about the most incredible moment I've ever experienced. The youth group that I went with made these little motions to go with it, and the people around us started getting into it too. I was totally moved; and then the guys left the stage, and the entire audience continued singing the choruses until we realized we ought to go to bed. |

Hebrews 13:2 has always been my personal favorite verse, so was ecstatic when I got the hits album and saw this title. The wistful sound got me, but it was the lyrics that really sucked me in. It reminds me of how I need to work on my relationship with God-- like you can do all His work and be His hand and feet and all He asks of you, but you have to be dedicated to *Him* above all. Very pretty song with a very good message. |

I don't have words to express what this song means to me. It was the first song that I ever thought, "Wow, I'd love to have sex to this song..." LoL, though with the lyrics, I guess you'd have to refer to it as 'making love'. :) But seriously, this was the song that hooked me on Dave.
The energy and the breathlessness it induces... just unspeakable... incredible. :) Turn off all the lights, light a couple candles when you're all by yourself, and turn it up, dearie--this song affects you like nothing else. |

LoL, first off, we need not mention that Dave Matthews is the freaking most brilliant poet to ever handle a guitar. :) And second, this song is INCREDIBLE. *Before These Crowded Streets* was my first Dave album, and I totally fell in love with this song. I didn't understand the implications or depth of it until I got involved with a self-proclaimed poet, but every little innuendo and every little tease gets me every time now. For me, it brings out this fun wild child persona that's all about the hips and lips.
This is definitely one of my "listen-to-it-as-you-dress-for-a-date" songs... totally makes me feel hot. :) |

Okay, okay, I'm a gooey little girl. :) My boyfriend and I have this thing where we'll go out for the afternoon and then wind up at one of our places and camp out in front of MuchMusic or MTV2 to nap together. This was a song that I'll always associate with the earliest times between us; the video had just come out, and we were just getting serious.... a beautiful, beautiful time.
And the frivolity of the music is perfect; I love that the lyrics are so honest and serious and the music is so playful and dumb. It's exactly how it should be-- gooey but able to make fun of itself. :) |

My all-time favorite song by my all-time favorite band. It's one of those songs that every girl in the world is like "That is all about me". Jane is the free spirit that every man wants and no man can keep. She makes them bitter but not unhappy, even if she does think they're jerks. :)

I've always listened to this song in terms of a relationship that's been over for a while and now the two are trying to totally be over it. Guy A is finally getting to the stages where it's okay to talk and conversate again, and he can accept the stuff Girl B put him through and not be bitter. This was always a "get-over-him-and-be-okay" song for me; it reminded me that eventually eveything is okay... LoL, how's that for irritatingly cute? |
